Asked my urologist about options for permanent birth control after baby 4 is born she gave me 3 options.
1)Tubal Ligation
2)Essure
3)Adiana never heard of this one but now after speaking to her I have the info
Ladies if you can just tell me what you choose to have done & why how your recovery went & succes with no more pregnancies will be great in providing me with outside comments on what I can choose to have done.I still have questions but those are for the DR & I to discuss. These are all permamnent birth control options,I will have 4 children that I brought into this world & so greatful that God had given me the chance to become a mother to all of them. Now I want to focus the rest of my life with them & with hubby.

What can I do next?

We are going with a vasectomy. He hems and haws at it and wants me to get the tubal after I have the baby. But, there is more recovery time needed and with a baby and 3 yr old at home, not happening. My bro had one and was fine after a day. I work, my hub doesn't so any recovery will be easier for him than me.

I had a tubal ligation after a c-section. No complications. I have no complaints. Thus far it has worked in preventing pregnancy. I got it done while still young (in my mid 20s) so, since the effectiveness becomes less over the years, it may be less effective for me when I am in my late 30s / early 40s. I don't know how old you are but that is something to consider.

You left one off the list:
4) VASECTOMY

In and out office procedure, very simple. You birthed the babies, let your husband handle the birth control now. :)

We opted for a vasectomy! Cheaper, easier, less recovery and ready to go MUCH sooner than Essure. If you have to have a c-section, then a tubal is easily done then, but if not, vasectomies for husbands are far better. And no whining from the hubby! After all, you've devoted 40 months of your life to growing and carrying babies plus the births, recovery, etc. A 15 minute procedure and bag of frozen peas for a weekend isn't such a big deal ;-)

We opted for hubby to have it done. It's so much easier for them. Also, someone on here had mentioned "tubal ligation syndrome" or something like that. It sounds somewhat questionable (as in, the medical world seems to deny it exists, while women strongly claim it does). So, be sure to look that up. In the end, we weren't willing to risk that it was real and for me to possibly end up with it. Hubby had it done a couple weeks ago, actually! From what I've read, it's the least dangerous option, easy to heal from, and the most effective. Both my hubby and I felt like since I'd had five babies...it was his turn to do something.

My husband had a vasectomy 2 years ago. I figured I had 3 children, 2 by c-section, so it was his turn. Plus while I am happy with 3 children, I was not (am still am not) ready to make it so I can't have anymore babies. I know he can't, but just knowing my body can is enough for me.

Essure is really wonderful. It is simple, effective (it can be tested by the doc), and was an easy recovery.

My friend had it after much research. She had it done one morning in a neighboring town, went out to eat sushi with her hubby right after, came home and milked the animals, had a few minor cramps but nothing more than that. She is very glad it was what she chose. They doc ran dye into her tubes and the inserts had done their jobs, no fluids got around them.

Please encourage your husband to get a vasectomy...Why should you have to do it..I've had three c-sections..My husband is open to it and happens to be seeing his urologist next week. I told him to ask about it that my body has been to hell and back and my plumbing needs to be left alone. He is sympathetic but I don't know if he will go through with it. We'll see..In the meantime we use BC. For women there a side effects to Tubal ligation. My 2 friends still have side effects 4 years later. Moodiness and longer periods...If I were you I simply wouldn't want to deal with it. Ugh.

Mama2KCK I am so with you on this one!!

I'm having Adiana done in January. I had a funky reaction to the copper in ParaGard, so I'm concerned about the metal in the Essure insert.
Adiana doesn't have that.

Can't speak to follow up, so I'll be watching this!

Here's my response to another tubal question awhile ago.

I had mine done less than 36hrs after giving birth vaginally. They would have done it the morning after he was born, but I opted to wait since he was born at almost midnight so I knew I'd be there one more night. Also, if you get an epidural, they can leave the epidural catheter in place and use it for the surgery. DS came too quick for me to get the epidural I wanted SO badly, so they gave me a spinal for the surgery instead. She went through the bottom of my belly button so you really can't see the scar unless your looking for it. The prep time took longer than the surgery, the surgery itself was under 15min I think. The recovery was pretty easy. I went home the same day it was done. I took percocet for the first couple days (you can take motrin too, I couldn't because I was going back on blood thinners for a clotting disorder), but after that I just took tylenol as needed. The area was fairly sore, but nothing major. The incision pain itself took longer to go away than the surgical pain, but it still wasn't horrible, just had to be careful I didn't pull the skin around it when moving certain ways and couldn't really put any pressure on it for a week or two. Mine was done 6mo ago and so far no issues. I'm still breastfeeding and haven't gotten my period back, so I can't say if they are any different yet. Oh, and my OB used clamps for the tubal - I don't know if it's just her or all the docs in the office, but she said there is less risk of bleeding with clamping so thats what they do.

Only difference is it's been 7mo now, not 6. Still no issues at this point and still breastfeeding. Good luck with whatever you use! And congrats on the new baby!

I choose to have a tubal ligation. I had it done though when I had my c section with my youngest. I figured since there where already in there they might as well do that too. I have had no problems with it. It's very nice not having to worry. I think all the girls in my family but two have had one with no problems. The other too that didn't one had my brother have a vasectomy and so far so good. But I know people that have gotten preganant after on of those too and no it was not someone elses. He looked just like his dad. And the other sil is not done having babies.

Good luck with what ever desition you make and God Bless!

I opted for tubal ligation after 3 miscarriages + 1 baby. The recovery went well (I'm a big baby on pain). I just stayed in the recliner the first day and I don't recall any misery, really. The next day I attended an outdoor party.

I didn't want to do oral birth control anymore because I didn't like the way I felt on it (emotions all over the place). Hubby's doc advised him not to get vasectomy due to MY age (wish I had known I was so close to menopause @ age 44).

Hope it all works out for you!
ETA: I'm sure vasectomy is the way to go for many! No argument from me. One reason I didn't think hubby should get one is that (God forbid) something happened to me :) then I knew that he would want more children. That factored into our personal decision.

I talked to my doctor a couple years ago but then found out the insurance I had at the time didn't cover it. Okay so you will cover birth control pills for however long but not that.

One thing my OB said was since I hate periods I would probably prefer an IUD because it stops your period. I was still going to go through with the Essure mind you, until my insurance was big jerks!! Then again it is covered under my current insurance but now I don't have time, go figure.

I'm going for the tubal.. right after I deliver. I didn't want to deal with implants or something crazy that's not proven. I know you can still get pregnant with a tubal but 90% of the time the woman was already pregnant before she had the tubal done. Good luck.

I had a tubal 13 years ago after the vaginal birth of my youngest son. I LOVE having my tubes tied. We didn't discuss a vasectomy because I didn't CARE if he could still have children or not ... *I* ABSOLUTELY NEVER EVER EVER wanted to be pregnant again. My son was born on a friday evening and they did the tubal the next morning. They took out almost an inch of tube on each side then cauterized (burned) the ends. They did a spinal block to do the surgery and went in through my belly button. I was sore that afternoon and a little bit the next day, but I was up around and back to normal within a few days and I had a 5 year old and 3 year old along with my newborn.

I haven't had any issues with periods or anything like that and have been very very happy to not have to worry about ever getting pregnant again.
