We received this gift set for a shower gift. After we put the bottles in the sterilizer they now have a honey colored tint (they may have had it before but we can't recall). The package says they are BPA free and I googled and found a review on Amazon stating that the honey color was normal, but I was wondering if anyone else encountered this.
Also, it says it comes with both newborn nipples and slow flow nipples. As far as we can tell all the nipples look the same, so I can't tell which is which. What is the difference between the two? And as long as he's taking the formula well, does it matter? BTW, he is 6 days old if that matters.

Did more research online and went to BRU to talk to some folks at the store and feel better knowing that the honey color is there on purpose to distinguish the differnet types of bottles. I read alot that folks disliked these bottles due to leaking. There is a model of the avent bottle that has some sort of anti-colic ring that gets inserted...that seems to cause leaking. The bottle we have just has 3 pieces: bottle, ring, nipple.
And yes, we finally found the number on the nipple indicating the flow rate. Thanks for everyone's help!
Hi! Yes, these Avent BPA free bottles come new out of the package with a honey tint. And I noticed that tint get a bit warmer in tone when we sterilized them the first time. After that, they stayed the same color. Can't speak for the nipples, our baby didn't like them so we switched to another bottle brand rather quickly. However, we always heated the milk in the Avent BPA free bottles, they wash up great too! Hope this helps and good luck!
We used these bottles, and the BPA-free ones do come honey colored from the store. You probably didn't notice it before. It's how you can tell the difference between the BPA free and regular Avents. (The regular ones really are clear). They worked well for us--we used a bottle warmer, boiled them, steamed them in those microwave bags--no problems at all. As the previous poster noted, the number is on the base--you should see a "1" imprinted to tell the difference. I wouldn't think it matters a lot if he's drinking well. Our son had a big differerence between 1 and 2 nipples though, so you'll probably want to find the number at some point. Good luck!
Yes, the BPA-free Avent & Born Free bottles are a honey-color. Like someone else said they all have a small clear number along the base. I've found that the newborn nipples are way to slow-flow, and it takes forever to get through a bottle. I always skipped these anyway. As long as the baby isn't choking on his feedings, the flow is fine. Good luck!
I have the Medela Nursing Bottles, and I noticed that some that I have used and washed many time in the dishwasher, have turned honey colored, but a few that I have not used as many times, are still natural clear. I wondered about that, too.
I have the new BPA free Avent bottles for my daughter, and yes, they are honey colored. I used these same bottles for my son 3 years ago, and those were clear. It seems that when they switched to BPA free they added a tint. The nipples will show you a number in a small circle. For a newborn, use #1 until about 2 months - then switch to #2. My daughter is 7 months and we are still using #2 because the #3 flow was just too much for her even at 4 and 5 months. I notice that someone mentioned about the leaking, and that is a problem. You need to be careful when you screw the lids on to make sure the threads line up. I don't notice the leak until after I straighten up the bottle once I've fed her. It's strange.

Avent nipples have a number on them, toward the base, so look there closely to distinguish them (not at the tips). Avent bottles are usually honey-colored - I have the BPA-free ones, and they came that color (they were never clear). I very much like my Avent bottles - they are probably my favorite brand, and I also have the Born-Free bottles, Playtex BPA-Free, and Evenflo bottles. The only caution I have is that the lids don't always screw-on properly the first time, so I always screw-them backwards first (to make sure the threads line up) before turning them the correct way.
It really depends on your baby's preference - my first son only liked the Avent bottles/nipples & my second son preferred the slow-flow nipples on a traditional bottle - the slow-flow nipples were also called preemie nipples & they are red...
