Photo Albums with Siblings: Make 1 for the Family, or 2 (For Each Kid)??

How is this done? With one child, it was cut and dry: everything was centered on him. But now I have 2 children....when doing a photo album, do I do 2 separate albums so they each have something for later? Or is that dumb, and just do one for me and let them figure it out when they get old? What about things like our first trip to the stockyards, for example: is that just one family album? I know this sounds stupid, but I'm kinda at a loss. Not the most creative person in the world. :P

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As I was reading the responses, I remembered that my grandma did that too: she had an album for each of her 4 kids (mostly professional pictures, birthdays, stuff "starring" them. Then I could copy some of the better photos that we'd all enjoy. You guys are right; it's actually pretty inexpensive these days, and a good hobby to let the kids help me with as they get older. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being silly to have several albums.

one idea I saw was to have one for each child of just them for each year: 4 years old, 5 years old; then have a family album that could be everything or just vacations or special things like that of the family........

I have a blog that I am turning into books for each of my kiddos - with only their stories/pictures in it. I'm making one album right now of just "family" pictures. It is so easy now to duplicate everything, I'm totally going to do that to some extent for my kiddos. It makes me sad that I can't have our whole album from growing up since I have to share with my brother!

Good luck!!

Oh mom- I have tons of photo albums. One for each child- one of all 3 kids, one of just my girls -2 years apart, share a birthday and are very close. family albums, extended family albums. Scrap books, and photo albums for certain events, children, vacations, etc. The albums of have of each child alone are mostly professional portraits I have had taken more then snapshots I took. Some are of posed portraits that I or another family member took but most or paid for portraits in the individual albums. They are ofcourse in order from birth to present. My older daughter (middle child-6 years old) is very interested in scrapbooking herself now so she has a scrapbook (basically about her) that she is working on. Most pictures have just her but there are family pictures, pet pictures, favorite places, friends, etc.
If you use digital photography (and even film) you can go to snapfish.com and shutterfly.com (too) they have photobooks that you can make. Totally cool but if you take 1000 pictures in a day like I do(no joke)- it gets way to expensive. If you want to remember 15 or 20 photos from a specialy trip or bday party that is a good way to do it. You pick your theme- drag and drop the photos you want (or let them arrange for you) and you are good to go. Hardback book- great quality. I love these things but like I said I take way too many pictures to be able to use them!
Hope this helps :)

It all depends on if you are doing regular photo albums or scrapbooks. If regular photo albums, I would have as many copies made when having them printed that you would need (per child and yourself) and put your set of pictures in an album chronologically and write in any dates on the backs or special information on a 4X6 card and put it in one of the slots. Put the children's copies of the pictures in separate photo boxes (in order). You can have your children put their own pictures in the books when they are older (or allow them to scrapbook them if they prefer to). They can use your book as a reference as to the dates and places. Kids love to work with their own pictures.

If doing a scrapbook, you have two choices to make it convienent. 1. Make as many copies as needed (like above) and put the children's copies in the boxes and scrapbook your set of pictures. 2. Only scrap your pictures and down the road, make photo copies of your pages and put in an album for them when they are older. You can buy color copiers that copy 12X12 pages much cheaper than you used to. It will still be a small fortune to color copy all of the pages, but cheaper than recreating each of the pages to make identical ones (not photocopied).

I have scrapbooked all of my daughter's photos in several different albums in chronological order and saved all the digital pictures on cd's. I wish I had just made an extra copy of them and put them in a box as I went. This would give me an extra set for her to do something with them (if she wants to) and an extra set in case something happens to my scrapbooks (GOD FORBID!!!).

Hope this helps!

I am working on 1 album and I have decided that when they get married I will make copies of the album and give them to the kids as a wedding gift. Afterall - I will want to still have them after they move out:)

I do think this could be spendy - but so is making 2 identical books. And in my case we are now expecting a 3rd;) And I'd eventually like another one.

Good luck in your decision.

Personally, I would make family albums chronologically and then when they move out, take photos from the albums to make their own to keep.

Hi A., by child #3 I gave up on albums and went straight to photo boxes...I have one for each of my girls, one for the "family", and one full of photos sent to us by family and friends (like christmas, class and birthday). This system seems to be working out well for us although since we got our computer and digtal camera more and more of our pics are in here rather than on paper! Best wishes

I would do one for each child, so when they are older and move out, they can take it with them and show it to their kids some day. But, I would also do one "family" book that stays with you forever. Pictures are cheap and so are photo albums, so it's not such a big deal. Even if you ordered online photobooks, say one of each per year [x3] that only about $100 a year.

What my mom did (there were four of us kids) was we each had a photo album and on trips and such she would make sure to take enough group shots that there would be one or two for each album and then if there were just one or two kids in the photo she would divide them up as evenly as possible. I love that my mom did this because when I got married I wanted to take my album with me so I could show my child what I did... if four kids had to fight over one album it would not have been a pretty sight because two out of the four are very strong willed and those trip memories & photos mean a lot to each of us.

My mother-in-law also made each of her two children a photo album as well as another one for herself (3 total). Yes it is a lot of work but I think in the end it will be much apperciated and fun for each person to look with their family through the album with their families.

If you are interested in making photo albums and want to do them online, I can help you with that. The great thing is everything is online, and you can order one copy for now - and later on you can order additional copies if/when you need them. This saves on the cost right now.
