Physical Therapy for Hips While Pregnant

Hi ladies. I'm 24 weeks along with baby number two. About a week ago I started having severe pain in my hips after sitting for 20 minutes or more. It feels like my hips are out of socket when I stand up, if I have been sitting for too long (i have a desk job.) I spoke with my doctor today and she said that the baby is so low that if I sit for too long they are starting to come out of socket. So she spoke a bit about getting me into physical therapy. She said it would be done in the water but didn't say much else about it. Have any of you done this before? Was it painful? Did it seem to help? Did your insurance cover it? What exactly are they going to be doing or trying to strengthen? Any advice or clarification would be great. Thanks!

What can I do next?

When I was carrying both my boys my back and hip were messed up and it would hit my syatic nerve. I went to the chiropractor. Not all will treat you when you are pregnant but if you find one that can it can help a lot!!!

Being very small framed, I couldn't have survived by pregnancies without my chiropractor. My hips rotated out, my back was out of whack, one leg would literally get longer than the other. I didn't do physical therapy, per se, but I did get in my hot tub quite a bit and was able to gently kick. The nice thing about water is that it's basically zero impact.
As to whether or not it will be covered under your insurance, your doctor can write a prescription saying that it's medically necessary under a certain diagnosis code. My insurance paid for my chiropractic because my little body wasn't handling the strain of the weight of my babies and the shifting of all the weight to my abdomen.
Water exercise is not painful, in my opinion, and quite helpful.
Don't wait until a hip pops out. That's REALLY painful.
I would definitely follow up with your doc about this. They can submit a request for authorization for treatment and see what they say.
A trip to a good chiro might be a good idea as well.

I wish you the best.

I'd do chiropractic and massage, and maybe water aerobics. Not PT.

I started seeing a chiropractor with one of my pregnancies, and it made all the difference. They don't touch the baby, just your hips, etc. I was at a point where I couldn't walk without severe pain, and after an adjustment, I felt normal again. I had to go a couple of times a week to keep everything aligned, but it was a lifesaver for me. With pregnancy, your ligaments get loose, making it more difficult for them to keep your bones aligned. I would ask around for a chiro who is good with pregnant women/babies. There are some awesome ones around. If you can find a midwife in your area, they can probably recommend one for you.

I, too, saw a chiropractor when I was pregnant. My dr. didn't know what was causing my "pelvic pain", but it would happen after sitting for long periods of time. I understand your pain! My husband finally convinced me to see a chiropractor and the benefits were AMAZING!!! She helped tremendously! I would highly recommend seeing a chiropractor that has experience/training treating pregnant women. :-) Good luck!!

Absolutely chiropratic and massage. I had the same issue with #3 and #4. And you must sleep with your legs supported with pillows: your top leg from hip to ankle should be level. I think water therapy would be nice but I never tried it. Also, get yourself a hip/belly support band asap, it will make a huge difference. Can you get one of those chairs at work that is a kneeling/sit chair? something else to try.
