Picking the Right Size

My 10 month old daughter was measured at 29 inch three weeks ago. I am trying to buy her some "spring" clothing. She is mostly wearing 12-18month at the moment, due to her length. I had asked the Dr. about her growth, and he said I should 'expect' her to grow 3 inches in the next 3 months. I'm not sure I trust him!

In any case, do I buy 18-24 month old clothes? My little girl will be 12 month in March. It seems crazy to me to be buying 24 month clothes in some cases, but for length, the labels read "30 inches."

I don't mind if the clothes are a little big, but since she is so thin (15%), I don't want her to be totally swimming in her clothes --my one savior is that I do cloth diapers, so her bottom is a bit 'big,' big enough to hold up the large clothing.

What would you do?

What can I do next?

I would also suggest buying a little bigger too. My thinking is those cute little outfits with short-sleeves and pants can be worn in spring or fall. And I have also learned that summers in Chicago can be cool. It seems like my kids are wearing jackets or jeans if we have evening activities or are in the city. Does hurt to have a few of each size. Keep receipts and just don't overbuy.

My daughter has always been off the charts for height, and at the bottom of the chart for weight, so it was always a challenge buying the right size.

For the most part with pants and shorts I would buy the bigger size and just pinch the waist on the sides and do a few stiches to hold in place. You could never tell that they were too big. Now shirts are a challenge because she has a very long trunk but average arms so when the arms fit, the shirt is too short around her waist and vice versa. I also have to buy the bigger shirts, and just hem the shirt sleeves.

Good luck, this is the only solution i have come up with.

Mu suggestion is to go with the bigger size. If she is 10 months then she is at this point probably climbing, crawling etc. you don't want the smaller size that will make her feel like a stuffed sausage and not be able to move her arms/legs. my son in law was insistant that my grandson wear his age appropriate sizes. so when he was a year old my son in law thought he needed a 12month size. it was awful. i kept totally different clothing at my house and stripped him the mnute i got him. its much better now that he is older but sometimes you just dont' know. your best bet is going to be to buy things and try them on. if they don't fit take them back. a hassle but you want her comfortable. and her age has nothing to do with her size. also different manufacturers sizes run different. so what may be wide for one maker may be slimmer for another. good luck

Hi J.-
When my daughter was 10 mo she was also 29 inches. She was also only 17 1/2 lbs...she is petite but tall, making it difficult to get length that fits with a waist that didn't fall off. She was wearing 12 mo and transitiioned into 18 months when she was about 1 yr 4 mo. She will be two in Feb and is still in 18 mo. She is about 33 inches. I'm finding that the 24 mo are really big in the waist. The length is also really long. If the clothes are too long, they are not practical for everyday purposes...the kids trip over them or get tangled in baggy clothes when sleeping.

I did find Cherokee jeans at Target that had an adjustable waist. I believe OshKosh has them as well. It might be worth a try.

As far as how much your daughter will grow, mine grew 1 inch from 9 mo to 12mo...She grew 3 inches from 9 mo to 15 mo.

If you're finding good deals on clothes, just save your reciept and don't cut the tags off until it gets closer to your daughter will be wearing them.

Good luck!

Seeing all the nice clothes is sooooooo tempting to buy now. If you do buy limit it to just a few pieces since you really don't know what her growth will be, keep the receipts and try to buy from places that allow exchanges/returns within 90 days (like Target or Kohls). I would go up one size. I had so many clothes for my older kids that were received as gifts and they were never worn or maybe work once because the size was wrong by the time they could wear it. They pretty much followed their month to size until about 18 months or so. Then shot up. I think they wore size 24 months for 2 months tops and were suddenly in a 2T. My little one is now 9 months old, almost 30 inches long and just into a size 9 or 12 months. We do have one outfit from Oshkosh that is size 18 months and is only slightly large on her.

It's doubtful that she's going to fit into 18-24 month clothing already! I would buy 12-18 month. Just don't buy a lot until Spring. Why not wait and see how big she is? Plus, by then spring clothes will be on sale. Our son was always on the tall side and in the 90% for height... and he still didn't skip a whole size! 18-24 month clothing is pretty large, and she'll wear it for a long time. And of course, different brands run differently.... If you want to make sure that you can use what you buy, the best advise is to buy what you need as you need it instead of trying to guess what size you'll need. But she's going to progress from one size to another. I definitely would not skip over a size unless you want her clothing to be huge. If that's the case, be sure that you buy adjustable waist pants! Good luck!
