Pierced Ears and Soccer

My daugher got her ears pierced over the weekend and her soccer league does not allow any jewelry. I have to take out her ear rings for games. Is this okay, they won't close in that short of time would they? They will not let her play if I put tape over her ears, if I put tape on her ears they will not let her play.

What can I do next?

I am a soccer coach for a local club who has the same policy - no jewelery. I hope everyone realizes that this generally is not a coaches decision, but a clubs decision and it is meant to keep everyone safer. I played soccer for many years, as well as coach - and totally understand this policy - could you imagine getting hit in the head with the ball and the back of the earring getting poked in the head?

It's unfortunate that you were not aware of this policy prior to getting her ears pierced. I remember having to really plan out when to have my daughters ears pierced in between sports - and still had it closer than recommended.

Like someone else said, everyone is different and when I asked the people who pierced her ears about how fast they would close up - they commented that everyone is different, but some do close very quickly. I would suggest that you take them out right before she gets on the field, have cleaning solution with you and put them back in as soon as the game is over. I would suggest maybe talking to her and explaining the situation to her so she is well aware and maybe letting her know that if they happen to close up (as that's a possability) that you will get them re-pierced when the season is over.

Good luck!

I'm coaching my son's soccer team this year and we have a little girl in the same situation. She either has to wear bandages on her ears or use a wide cloth headband to cover them. She usually just wears the headband and then it keeps her bangs out of her face anyway. I wouldn't take them out. Not only could they close up, but handling them so much might cause an infection or make it really irritated.

They shouldn't close. Some stores have tiny plastic, clear spacers that you can put in for games.

I am one of those old relics that doesn't have pierced ears, so this may be totally off the wall....I wonder if it would work if you thread s piece of CLEAN fishing line through the wholes, tie it off into a circle...so it doenst come out ( you can clip it when you are ready to remove it) and cover THAT with a piece of tape or something that the coach would approve of?? That would keep the hole open during practice and the games but she would be obeying the league rules.
I know it probably seems like a silly rule to you but two of our girls were very actively involved in fast pitch softball and I have seen injuries due to jewelry.
Hope you come up with a workable solution.

Hi B., Have you asked about putting Band-Aids over the ear rings? When my sisters were in soccer if one of the girls got their ears peirced and it was during the time when you couldn't take them out the league would allow them to take Band-Aids and put them over their ear lobes, front and back. It was usually one band-aid wrapped around the ear lobe. They look a little goofy, but it worked.

I agree with Vicki S. It seems the potential for infection is the bigger risk here. The headband idea seems a great alternative, if your coach is willing to be just a bit more open-minded. Of course, it might not be his/her call to make. Good luck to you.

Ask her coach if you can put tape over them for now. I coached girls basketball for 6 years and our refs always allowed the girls to put tape (athletic tape) over the earrings so others did not get hurt.

My ears did not close up over just an hour or so, but my daughters closed up in 10 minutes, I think it depends on the person. My kids have been in sports like this as well. The coaches usually say in a case like this put tape over them. Use the type of tape that you use to bandage a wound, it wont come off while playing. You wrap it from the back of the ear to the front of the ear.

Be glad they told you ahead of time. Our coach didn't inform us of this. When I got to the game one Sat. (I had to work so wan't there when game started) the ref had ripped my daughter's ear rings out since dd didn't know how to take them out. She said that they shouldn't have been in any way, tough luck. Said the alternative was to ban her from playing for the season. Needless to say, we don't play soccer any more.

I have seen athletes put bandaids over their earrings when they couldn't take them out. You would have to check with the referee/umpire to make sure you could do this. Hope this helps.

I had an earring fall out when I was little after having my ears pierced for almost 3 weeks. I noticed that it fell out immediately and I still had a VERY hard time getting the earring back in. We ended up getting ice and having my mom "punch" it through again. Sorry for the bad news. I have now had my ears pierced for 26 years and if I don't wear earrings at least once every couple of months, my holes try to close up to this day. I am not a big fan of wearing my earrings because my ears tend to hurt after a few hours of wearing them, but I like to have the option to wear them for special occasions.

I would think it would be too early to take them out at all, but maybe not if you put them right back in after the game. My daughter's ears are notorious for closing up even after they've been in the ascribed amount of time. She's had her ears pierced 2 or 3 times already because of this.

Good luck!

You can ask the Soccer league if they will allow you to use plastic earings. I know I have seen girls use them in High School when they have gotten their cartilage pierced.
Good Luck.

They say not to remove them at all for at least 6 weeks or to change them,if taken out for a period of time there will be some slight skin that will develop over the hole and may make it difficult possibly hurt when inserting the earrings back into the ear.

It would hurt a LOT if you take them out & try to re-insert them. You also risk infection. I would try to cover them or take them out & get them re-pierced off season. Also, you could make the holes heal too big if you take them in & out before they are healed. If the shape is a little oo big, her earings will always sag when she gets older & wears adult earings. She will thank you as an adult if you take them out & re-pierce them later! ;-)

Good luck!

It should be okay for her to have her earrings out for an hour while she plays soccer and then put them right back in. The holes shouldn't close in that short amount of time. I would swab them with alcohol or bathe her before putting them back in after she's been sweating and playing outside. The end of a new earring used in piercing is pointed anyway so that will help to push it back through the hole. And, when she isn't playing a soccer game I would leave them in until the hole is established and then she can have fun changing out her earrings. It's so fun to share in each stage of our kid's growing up...isn't it.:) Or at least enjoy them until they reach those teenage years.:o

B.,
I have 3 girls all who have played select soccer. They have all pierced ears. All you have to do it put tape or a bandaid over them if the ref asks just say they were recently pierced and he/she should let it go. We have never once had a problem.
Good Luck!

B., her newly pierced ears won't close up in the span of a soccer game but clean her ears well and clean the earrings before you put them back in. It may take them a little longer to heal possibly, but I can't see any harm in it.
Good luck

My ears close up extremely fast right after I get them pierced. I would be careful how long you leave the earrings out. You might just have to let the ears close up until soccer season is over, then get them repierced.
