My 5-year old woke up this morning with pink eye...yes, I know that it is pink eye... We have already been there and done that for sure. So I called the on-call nurse for my pediatrician's office, who tells me that I have to call the south tampa office since they have urgent care hours. So I cannot get in touch with my regular pediatrician that knows the history. So I call the south tampa office and explain the situation...there doctor is not even there yet so they have to call me back. I seriously doubt that a doctor that has never seen my son is going to call in the prescription in for me...hence why I was hoping to contact our regular pediatrician. So now I am waiting on a call back. So either I am going to have to take my son to this office in south tampa (not close) for an office visit ($20 copay plus $40 in medicine) or I will end up going to another pediatric urgent care ($50 copay and $40 medicine). Sigh....and this is all for pink-eye....I am so frustrated...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The south tampa office doctor on call finally called me back at 10:45 am...they close at 11 am and we live 30 minutes away from this office. She made it quite clear that she was put out to call in a prescription since she had never seen my child although she would do it this once. Well gee, if they had called me back immediately, there would have been time for me to bring my child in to their office befor they closed. She also said that pink eye was not considered to be an emergency and we could easily go for an office visit Monday-Friday. HOWEVER, we all know how contagious pink eye is and I do have another child to consider. Why in the world would I wait a day before starting treatment knowing that the child has to be on the antibiotic drops for 24 hours before going back to daycare. That would mean that not only would we have to miss the day of work for the doctor's appointment, but probably the day after too to give the medicine time to work. Sometimes, the doctors just do not seem to consider the needs of children and working parents. Luckily we still had some medicine (that wasn't expired) from the last time we had this issue. We went ahead and gave him a dose and we are now waiting for the pharmacy to fill the prescription...

regular tea bag, put it on his eye, the tannins get rid of pink eye. Much healthier than the toxic medicine, not to mention much cheaper

There is a homeopathic eye drop called pink eye relief I bought it at our CVS Pharmacy but have seen it at Walmart. If you catch the pink eye soon enough it does work. I used it on my self and both of my kids ages 8 and 5. For about 6 months we had no medical insurance and one got pink eye and then I got pink eye I bought it and it worked. So when my other child got it later on and eventhough we had insurance I used it to save a copay and perscription copay and it worked! Try it and if it doesn't work take him to the ped in a couple days..it's Sunday so your doc should be there tomorrow. I used to get pink eye once a year from age 13 until about 25 so I know it's awful. I would not reccomend these Pink Eye Relief drops if they did not work especially for a kid.

I have had this about 3 times in the last couple months. If you keep taking the antibiotics, your body will become resistant to it, and it won't work. I finally gave up on them and l looked up home remidies. I found one with great reviews and it said to mix honey and warm water, and drop it into your eye. SO, I tried it and did it 3 times a day for 3 days and it worked! It was all cleared up and I never had to do any antibiotic drops!

I am dealing with it now in my home daycare. When the first child (15 months) started with it last Monday, woke up from her nap with icky running eyes, she went home an hour later and went to the doc that night. Got antibiotic drops, was back here Wed at lunch time, with drops to use and eyes seemed fine. I spent Tuesday morning cleaning and disinfecting things that I thought she would have touched and washed all her bedding. It wasn't until Friday that the next girl (18 months) started with icky eyes. She now has drops and will be fine to come back on Monday. The pharmacist suggested Polysporin drops for pink eye for all family members to stop the spread, her family and mine are both using the drops, hoepfully no one else will get it.

There are some home remedies, here is one website:
http://www.grandmashomeremedies.com/pink-eye.html
It seems cotton balls soaked in boiled salt water (and probably cooled so you don't burn) on the eyes can help clear infections, as can chamomile teabags (boiled and cooled) as can something called Boric Acid Eye Wash, which I assume you would buy at a drugstore. My stand-by medical advice is always the pharmacist, so perhaps talk with the local pharmacist where you buy meds and ask what you can do until tomorrow. Since this is highly contagious be careful about what your son touches or otherwise the whole house will have it soon. Good luck.
