Hello everyone,
I have had a cold for about 4 days. Last night my left eye started itching really bad, I assumed it was makeup in my eye. All night long pus oozed out of my one eye. My eye was red and swollen this morning. Does this sound like pink eye? Can you only get pink eye in one eye and not the other??? What is the treatment for pink eye??
I put in a call to my Dr and although I realize it is not a medical emergency it has been hours and no call back yet!
Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the responses. I did call my Dr. again and he gave me a prescription for an antiobiotic eye cream over the phone (eurizroymiacin antiobiotic (sp?)). I picked it up and rub it on my eyelid 4 times a day. But you guys gave me all the advice about how contagious it is and to wash my pillowcases etc. The Dr. did not!
Of course I woke up this morning and it was in my other eye! Darn it!;)

Yes, you can get it in one eye. I am from a family of 5 girls and when we all had it there were 5 eyes looking at my mom.

Hi A.,
Although I am not a doctor and can't diagnose what you have. It sounds like pink eye. Yes it can spread to your other eye and is really, really contagious.
I do have a home remedy.
Take Johnson & Johnson baby wash or shampoo. Lather it on a washcloth with some water and clean your eye with it. Use another side of the washcloth and do the same thing for the other eye. If it is pink eye, it should go away in just a couple of days. My older son got pink eye all the time in preschool and this is what I used to clear it up.
Good luck...make sure to wash your hands all the time.

If it is pink eye, it is contagious.
Your kids can get it.
When you sleep, put a towel or something on your pillow, so you don't spread the germs, and wash/change out the towel daily. Keeping in mind, that even a pillow case can harbor germs, from your eye, especially if it is watery/weeping etc.

As the other poster said, wash hands frequently. Go to the Doctor... it can get more infected.
Usually, when a kid has pink eye... they need to stay home from school, because it is contagious. This may put it in perspective.

take care,
Susan

This sound like what I just had last week. The same thing with me, I thought it was makeup in one eye. Then both became irritated, so it easily spread. See a doctor for antibiotic drops. You may be able to find some over the counter stuff for some itch relief. you could always go to an urgent care(not an ER) to see someone today. It clears up in about a week.
Good Luck!

Sound like it could be. Do your eyes feel glued together in the morning by the discharge? Most pharmacies have drops to treat pink eye and I think Ralphs has some also in the health care section. And, yes, you can have it in only one eye but it can spread so be very careful (it can also spread to your children so be diligent about hand washing and disposing of whatever you use to clean out your eye).

I had a difficulty getting rid of pink eye years ago and the doctor recommended washing my eyelids with baby shampoo to get rid of any bacteria that was forming on my eyelids or eyelashes. Whenever I feel that pink eye or eye irritation starting to form again I begin cleaning my eyelids with baby shampoo. Good luck.

Yes, you can get it in just one eye. My son used to give it to himself when he was a toddler by wiping his nose with the back of his hand and going straight to the eye. You generally need drops from the doctor.

Hello. Neosporin ointment will take care of it. You don't have to get a prescription for the opthalmic neosporin. Regular old neosporin will do the trick. Make sure you wash you eyelid gently before you apply the oint. to remove any pus. Then take a bit of neosporin oint on your finger and try and place it on the inside of your lower lid. Then close your eye for about a minute. It's a little messy, but it does the trick. You should do this 3 times a day. Pink eye is very contagious, so be sure you wash your hands before you touch anything, including your boys. I've been a nurse for 40 years and a doctor told me this years ago. I've used it on my children, myself, and even my horses, and it works. Best of luck.

Hi A.-

It sounds like pink and eye to me as well. I've had it a few times and it always started in one eye and then spread to the other eye. I would go into Urgent Care as soon as you can, or try some of these homeopathic remedies recommended. The relief that I found was hot compresses on the eye, but you do have to be careful not to spread it.

Feel Better soon!!

Check out "sty" on google. Can you see a white head like a pimple? I have had one three times now- it does "ooze" so when you are asleep it dries and becomes crusty. My even get a runny nose and it throbbed when I would bend over.
One time, I had the symptoms of a sty (that's what everyone kept telling me I had) but there as no "head" or anything to see. I finally went to the doctor and I had a staff infection in my eye!! It was horrible, I was admitted to the hospital with IV antibiotics. If you are really uncomfortable don't wait, go see the doctor.

SOunds like pink eye, which is very contagious. Keep your hands very clean and don't touch your eye. My son had it last year, and I've had it more times than I can count.

Here's the deal. My son's pediatrician said that the drops and antibiotics are simply a placebo. The eye will heal itself naturally without all of the drops etc. I used to get the prescription etc. and my son went without and low and behold it took him the same amount of time to heal without drops as it did me with them.

Here's how you can speed healing: Take a tea bag (black caffeinated) like lipton's, steep it in boiling water and place the hot tea bag on your eye(as hot as you can take it). I know it sounds crazy, but the tannins in the black tea act as a natural anti-biotic. I've done it many times. It'll make your eye feel better as it heals. Do it at least 8 or more times a day. Decrease as your eye gets better.

Whatever you do, STOP wearing eye makeup until both eyes are completely healed. You should also throw away your current eye liner, mascara, eye shadow etc. They are now have the bacteria...or could be the cause of a bad allergic reaction.

Yep, it does sound like pink eye. You'll end up needing antibiotic eye drops. In the meantime, be sure to wash hands often, and to be careful about not spreading it to your other eye (or your boys), as it is very contagious.
Once you get your drops, it should go away quickly, though.
Good luck!

Sounds like pink eye to me. They now have over the counter meds for it. I used Similasan homeopathic pink eye relief. It cleared up in about a day and a half. I would use it for 3 days to be sure the infection is gone. I think it may have cost about $8 - $11, but worth it to not have to go in to see the doc on their busy schedule and then drop of a script and then pick up. I found my bottle at Longs. I just can't remember the cost for sure.

It does sound like pink eye. I had it once and I did have it only in one eye. However, be careful because it is highly contagious and could easily spread to your other eye. My doctor prescribed some eye drops for it and it went away after a couple of days. Good Luck!

instead of a cold, you might have something like a throat infection which (i've experienced this) if it is not treated, it can travel up the back of your throat to the back of your eyes and guess what it becomes a pink eye infection...

I had it one time in both eyes so painful b/c it was infection in all 3 areas... bad...

You very well may have pink eye BUT, it could simply be that your sinuses are draining into the eye. I often have the exact same symptoms as pink eye, but it's actually the drainage. If the antibiotics don't work in a couple days, then it's likely not pink eye. (There is nothing to "fix" the other problem, but it's usually short lived ~ a couple days~ and no real health concerns, and NOT contagious.)

Good Luck,
H.

If you have an urgent care, go there. If it is pink eye, you want the snitbiotic eye drops ASAP before it spreads to the other eye, which usually happens with pink eye. Benedryl also helps with the itching. The times I've had pink eye my eyes are stuck and swollen shut in the morning, very itchy, burning and the ooze keeps coming back. I love to keep the eye drops in the fridge-the cold drops are a relief to the burning feeling.
A cold can spread into the eye sometimes. The disharge could be mucus from your sinus' leaking into your tear duct. This usually happens when there is a sinus infection.
Either way you should go see a dr. I do believe there is an over the counter eye drop for pink eye but my doc said those aren't very effective due to all of the different strains and they don't have any antibiotics in them.
Wash your hands tons and tons, especially if you've rubbed your eyes. It's also wise to get new eye make-up and switch out contact lenses of you wear them. Wash your pillowcase too.
Hope you feel better soon.

A., you might want to log onto NAET.com. When the immune system is down, things like pink eye show up.

Allergies do cause the immune system to be compromised. NAET is a group of allergists around the world, the ONLY allergists who treat and eliminate allergies.

Two things to consider with regard to great health is 1. Allergies and 2. deficiences. Once both are addressed, the body will heal itself and normalize.

You have plenty of other good responses so I just wanted to add one thing. I had a friend who had it and her doctor told her to throw away all of her eye make-up because it had been infected and also her contacts. Be sure to ask your doctor about these things if they apply to you.
