I am a veteran homeschooling mom. A lot of the curriculum out there have placement tests. Math courses and reading almost always have placement tests.

I use McCall-Crabs for reading comprehension. My son reads a short story and answers questions and it gives me his level of understanding. To me just reading words isn't a good indicator, comprehension is key. I use Math U See for both kids and they have placement tests on computer for free. If you're just wanting an overall read on ability I'm sure there are tests out there for that.

Please know one of the beauties of home education is you can work on strengths and weaknesses without a child feeling inept. My son is an auditory learner. His memory is incredible. He struggles with language arts because it doesn't make sense to have rules and then many exceptions to every rule. He excels in math because the rules stay the same. He always finishes his math coursework earlier in the school year and loves it. I've been able to put some pieces together that makes his language more interesting.

If you'd like to visit more about anything homeschool, please feel free to pm me. I'd also encourage you to find a co-op of some kind near you. The support, experience and encouragement you'll receive will help you in this journey.

Blessings!

If you are doing a state-funded homeschool charter, they will probably have a placement test for your child to take. When we started homeschooling last year, we went through K12, and they have a very extensive online placement test that covers all subjects.

We don't do K12 anymore, but I found that if you've settled on a curriculum, you can always call the publisher and ask questions about what level would be the right one for your child. They're always really helpful about that, I've found.

The same institutions and schools that provide curricula, offer placement tests for homeschoolers. They also provide standardized tests, which you will need eventually.

That's an interesting question. I assumed the program you purchase has that test incorporated as part of their curriculum. Otherwise if a child has gone to school and passed the previous grade they'd simply start on the next level and see how it goes. If they can't do the work you review what they're supposed to know and work on that for a few weeks while going ahead with everything else

Def agree with previous posters :) If you have chosen curriculum, nirmally they provide online testing to see what materials you need & you can call them & ask questions. If you just need a starting point here's one we've used, CAT to measure reading, reading comprehension, and math computation. Also have used a more extensive test for other subjects. A great company is Seton: http://www.setontesting.com/
Good Luck!
