I'm looking for any advise on a Breast pump. Where do I get one? What's the best one and should I rent or buy if we are not having any other children?

What can I do next?

C.,
I rented one from Presby Dallas, a Medela Symphony, it was great. Glad I rented one though because I was not able to get my milk supply up near enough to breastfeed. But you will probably know before you buy one. I knew I would have problems. I hear the pump n style is great. I personally found washing the parts very tiring, but I was also washing a ton of Dr. Brown's bottles at the same time which have a lot of parts. Hope that helps.

I know many of the mother's suggested not to rent a pump. I will tell you that some people really do not enjoy pumping and end up with a pump that they have paid 200+ dollars. I bought a pump before doing any research (it was a worthless piece of junk). On the recommendation of a lactation specialist, I ended up renting a Medela Lactina. I had great success with the Medela.

You might look into renting for a month or two just to see if breast feeding is for you.

Best of luck to you and your soon to be little bundle of joy,

K.

The Medela Pump N Style is a fantastic pump and I would highly recommend it. Before purchasing, I would suggest you call your insurance company as many will cover the cost. You might need a Dr's "prescription" but that shouldn't be an issue if your Ob/Gyn is pro breastfeeding. No matter what pump you choose, be sure to stock up on bottles and frozen milk bags!

When I was nursing, I loved my Medela "Pump in Style." I could pump both sides at once while reading a book or magazine. If you're not planning any more children, I would look into the cost of renting vs. buying since they are a little pricey.

Good luck with the baby!

Hi C.,

I would advise against renting a pump. The expense will get to be quite high and then you could have bought one for much less than what you end up renting one for. We rented one for a few weeks after the birth of my daughter because she was born early and we were unprepared. We delivered at Plano Presbyterian and they use the Medela brand pumps - they are GREAT!! I ended up buying a Pump in Style Medela brand pump from A Mother's Gift inside the hospital. It was a great pump, fairly quiet, and comfortable to use. You'll probably spend close to between $200 and $300 for a good pump, so be aware of that, they're not cheap. Once you are finished with using the pump, you can always sell it on ebay. There are always people in the market to find a good used pump, even moms on here.

Good luck with your delivery, it's just around the corner!!! My c-section is scheduled for October 1st, so I'm right behind you!! I see you're in Plano, what hospital are you delivering at?

Congratulations on your pregnancy! There are great options available to help you meet your goals with breastfeeding. I sell Medela products/pumps, rent the hospital grade pumps and have nursing bras as well. If you give me some more specific information I would be happy to discuss a few different options with you. I can set up the pump for you and go over all of the beginning information with you as well. The advice I will give you first and foremost is DO NOT purchase a used pump or borrow a Pump In Style Pump since these are made for personal use ONLY and can have risks associated (specific information regarding these risks is available on Medela.com or I can send you some information if you'd like ).
Please let me know if I can be of help. Best of luck to you!

I saw a lot on here about Medela and I too have heard great things about it. I would also look at Ameda pumps as well. I bought one on the recommendation of a lactation consultant and have been extremely pleased with it. The one I bought did not come with a bag but I got 2 Enfamil bags for free during my pregnancy and hospital stay that I use. (I know, it's very ironic!) I found the Ameda pumps were about half the price of the medela pumps and the lac. cons. swore by them. She told us that Ameda targets more of the European market where Medela targets the US and that they used to be the same company and have very similar pumps. I didn't look it up to verify but like I said, I've been very happy with it. I googled Ameda Purely Yours Pump and found several companies that sell on the internet and don't charge tax or shipping, so look around. You might also take the advice from another poster about waiting until you're sure you'll need it so you don't waste your money. Good luck!!

I have a Medela Pump in Style Advanced and it's a great pump! You can purchase one on-line brand new for much less than in-store. The medela company is very reliable and will send you any parts you need if you ever have a problem with your pump.
I have worked full-time since our first son was born and then now am going part-time and have been using it. It's all in a backpack so when my huby and I get away for the weekend, I can take it with me and pump in the hotel. It's so easy and makes it more convienent to stay committed to breastfeeding. I nursed our first son for 17-months and loved every minute of it. It's worth spending the money especially if your planning on having another baby. Good luck.

I have the Medela advanced pump with the backpack. It's the best on the market. You can check reviews at some of the stores that sell them..that's why i bought it as well as on the advice of my friends. One of my friends has 3 boys and she swears by it. Unfortunately, I didn't make any milk so I wasn't able to use it. Let me know if you are interested in buying it from me. I plan to put it on Ebay at somepoint anyway. It has all the parts and is completely clean as it was never used!

I'm also 37 and i just had my first child last october so we are similar! My husband and i have also been together 7 years! We live in Lake Highlands. Good luck!

Congrats on your baby on the way. I would recommend waiting until breast feeding is established, it would be a shame to waste money on a breast pump and for some reason not need it or be able to use it. Hospital grade pumps rented for about $30 month when I had my son (4 years ago), so it may be worth it to buy your own depending on how long you plan to breast feed. Also, depending on if you will be working or will be a stay at home mom. If you plan to work, it would be of benefit to get a better pump, since you will be using it daily and need it to pump well. I used the Medela pump in style and think that is the best one out there. I thought the hand held pumps were a complete waste of time. I do not have any other experience with other brands. You can find used pumps on craigs list and ebay. Also, ebay sells brand new pumps, sometimes a few dollars cheaper than in the stores. Consumer reports does not recommend buying used pumps, even though all the components would be new. It would be a personal decision.
Best of luck. I will be doing this again in 12 weeks, so will also be in the market for a breast pump.

Medela Pump in Style is the best! I bought mine for my first child 5 years ago, used it with the second two years ago, then lent to a friend a year ago. If you are serious about providing your baby (and future babies) with breast milk - it's worth the money.
