My son has a horrible smelling room! Every day without fail he will poop while he is in his room for a nap, or in the morning when he wakes up and his room smells horrible. I keep it really clean and wash his blankets and sheets frequently, but I just dont know how to keep it frim smelling. I don't want to just cover it up with an air freshener. Can you please help me. It is also to cold still to just leave the window open to let it air out.

Kathrine,
Let's face it, boys stink. They just do. I have 2 daughters and one son and my son has smelt different from the girls from the get go. My son has had obnoxious breath most of his life. I took him to the Dr. and Dentist about it and they have found nothing wrong. I have heard that little boys have a "dirty dog" smell and that one women who lost her son used to smell his shirts, searching for that "little boy dirty dog smell to hold on to." You could try shampooing the carpets or put a fan in te room for cirrculation. Good luck.
PLEASE stay away from air fresheners. They are toxic – they contain phthalates as well as other ingredients humans should not inhale (especially young humans). Here's a report you can read on them published by the Natural Resources Defense Council: http://www.nrdc.org/health/home/airfresheners.asp
You might want to invest in an air filter that uses activated carbon. There are quite a few on the market, and they will take smells and toxins out of the air safely. I think you'd need a fairly large unit to handle that much smell, though. Fresh air from outside, or just grinning and bearing it are the most natural options. Warmer weather will be here soon, and your son won't be in diapers forever.
I've often thought that diapers with activated carbon in the linings should be available just for little guys like yours.
I found that have a Febreeze plug-in seems to help...we have it set to the high smelling output in our daughters room. The Diaper Genie is right next to it and it totally helps with the smell. I does come in nice scents, especially the lavender, which helps with sleeping...
I agree not to spray anything into the air - it must be cleaned out. They have small air cleaners and ionizers that are tiny enough not to be seen or heard or with mine I like the "white noise" it creates in the background and it helps them sleep. Good Luck
You don't say how old your son is or if you're using a diaper pail. If you are using a pail, I found that sprinkling a good amount of baking soda into it when I put in a new bag and then inside of each poopy diaper (flush as much poop as you can get off) before putting it in the diaper pail helps.
I feel the same way about it being too cold to leave the window open, but you might try just cracking it and then leaving your son's door closed whenever you leave the house to let some air in, and then you can just close it when you get home.
Also, if you have carpet, try steam cleaining it, and then moving the diaper pail out of the room, say into the garage.
It takes a while to get the smell out, but it will happen. Good luck.
Even if it is cold try opening a window. Open all the windows a bit while he's not in the room. Airing for 5 minutes or so is good for the room's climate especially in the winter. The dry air from heating all day dries out the sinuses and you are more prone to colds.
Hi K.,
Our company has something that neutralizes smells naturally without all the caustic chemicals; it's called Sol-U-Mel. Amazing stuff. Please give me a call. ###-###-####
K.,
If the smell won't leave, than it sounds like it's your diaper pail. My daughter had the same problem, so I bought a big thing of Folgers and put some coffee grounds in there a couple of times a week. Her room no longer smells.
Have you tried spraying Febreze in his room when he is not there? Or you could get an ionizer and use it in his room. L.
Boys just stink! My boys are 2 and 4, and in the same room P.U. I would agree with the no sprays, you want to watch out for VOC's. Just open a window even though it is cold and then shut it up and let it warm up. This probably won't make you feel much better, but they will just get stinkier!
Light a match or two. It's better than air fresheners which are filled with all sorts of chemicals. You could also burn some sage, but that takes some doing. We have the same issues with no air flow in the diaper changing area that is also in our bedroom. Pee-U, it can linger!
We had a similar problem with my daughter's room, and her bathroom. They just got stinky no matter what I did! I finally got one of those oil diffuser jars (the ones with the reeds sticking out). They come with lovely scents and you can stick it in a corner somewhere. The scent is continuous and those jars last forever.
You might also try some carpet freshener, but the oil diffuser will last longer and has a cleaner scent.
Good luck!

I would use Lysol after you get him out then close the door.
Do you have some place safe where you can set a candle out of reach? My living room where i change the stinky diapers get this way after poopy diapers. Not always but sometimes. So i have a candle that i light afterwards or right before and within a matter of a couple of minutes the odor is gone. I a smalll area like a bedroom you you may have to one leave the door open to let it air out and then have the candle near by or place it in the window if it will be out of reach for the kids. I wouldnt use airfreshners either. They are one very harmful and two only work for a few mintues and then gone so it isnt it effective money wise or odor wise. I wish it would warm up already just to be able to have fresh air running thorugh the house!!!!! I would do that for sure once ti does get nice out just leave the window open if it is safe to do so.
Get an air purifier for the room -- preferably one that works with water.
You can add essential oils to the water, there are some that make you feel sleepy, since it's the crib room use one of those (it will say on the oil bottle what it's good for)
Only con with a water air purifier is that it makes the room a bit cooler, but they work so well with smells with the oils that you don't need them on for long.
Other pros are it will clean the air he's sleeping in and the essential oil smell will help him to sleep, also the noise of these water purifiers is called "white noise" and is supposed to help sleep also.
I found two things that really help with smell. (3) Oxyclean, Amway's LOC - knocks out odor without awful "Pinesol" which is toxic. Also, dish soap. The nice smell in the dish soap for the walls, the floors, or LOC for that (LOC is great for smelly bathrooms) and Oxyclean for the sheets. Also, do you have a diaper pail in the room? Does it have a good lid?
You're smart about the air fresheners. They are also toxic to everyone. They have harmful petroleum products and things in them that you DON'T want to breath.
do you keep the dirty diapers in his room? if so, take them to wherever it is you keep the garbage instead. are you closing the door when he sleeps? maybe try keeping it open or cracked.

I know it's cold, but try putting a box fan in the window to draw out the odor. As soon as the odor is gone, close everything up. It takes less than 5 min.
We have two boys, so I know what you are talking about. They are 5 & 7 now and their room always smells like dirty, sweaty boys. It is disgusting, but the quick fan thing works.
Good luck.
Go to Wal-Mart and buy a candle warmer for about $10, then buy a couple of candles. I like the natural candles, like vanilla, holiday baking, banana nut bread, etc. I have allergies to chemical smells but these candles don't bother me at all.
When they are out of the room put a bowl of vineger out.

Baking Soda with 35 drops of your preferred aromatherapy oil mixed in. Sprinkle on carpet or other surface let sit, and vacuum...It seriously works wonders.
You can make air freshners! A citrus fruit with whole cloves stuck all around it. Put in cheese cloth with a pretty ribbon and hang it up. The orange (or whatever) will not rot with the cloves stuck in it and it will smell wonderful. Your kids can help make them too! Baking soda on the floor and vacumed up will get it out of the carpet.
Take some lemon wedges and put them in a small bowl with water. Microwave long enough to heat the water and release the smell of the lemons. Put the bowl in your son's room and it will smell lemony fresh.
Baking soda is supposed to be a great odor eater. That's why we all put it in our fridge and freezer right? Anyway, Odors can get into lots of places, since you are already washing sheets and fabrics, you might want to try making a paste of Baking soda and water, and washing the walls with it. Then, open the window a bit to air out and let dry. It may not get the smell out permanantly, but it should help. Coffee grounds work too as absorbants. Dryer sheets do wonders for stinky shoes when put inside... maybe there is a way to modify that idea. Good Luck
I have the same problem . . . only instead of ONE stinky pooper, I have TWIN poopers. My twin boys can stink up their bedroom so badly you can smell it outside the room even when the door is closed! Lysol Neutra Air is absolutely wonderful. It eliminates the odor - it doesn't just cover it up.
I use fabreeze in my son's room after he is not in it. It works great!
