My 15 month old son has developed the worst diaper rash I have ever seen. It is bright red and actually raw in one spot. He has had this since Saturday (6days now)and I have tried everything that I can think of to make it go away. We have used Desitin, Bag Balm, Nystatin cream (in case it was yeast) and even switched him to Huggies from Pampers in case it was the diapers. He also has some diarrhea and we have no idea what that is from either. He is not acting like he is teething because I know about the diarrhea and rash with Molars. it breaks my heart to change his diaper because he just cries. He is super fussy lately because of it and this is a kid who is usually such a happy kid that people are always commenting on how happy he is. He has a doctor appt Friday for a well baby check but I was wondering if there was anything else I could try in the meantime. By the way we have not changed anything in his diet and have actually cut out all juice in case it was contributing to the diarrhea. Thanks for your help in advance.

I'm glad you'll be seeing his doc tomorrow. My son was born at 29 weeks, and so we had lots of time to get trained by the NICU nurses. Other than treating an underlying issue such as a yeast infection, they said that the best thing for diaper rash is air; let your son wander around half naked for as long as you can handle it. I hope your little guy feels better soon!

Hi J.,

Forget all the expensive products. Go to the grocery store and get a box of Kingsford corn starch. Use it like a powder and your babies rash will be gone in no time. It's very gentle and pure and has been used for many, many years.

Blessings.....

J.,

I am so sorry to hear about your baby's diaper rash! The best diaper cream that I have found is called Boudreux Butt Paste. You can buy it at target, and it is extremely gentle but works really fast to get rid of the diaper rash- also for sore,raw areas- as far as the diarrhea goes, when you change your baby-use a really soft wash cloth instead of wipes with slightly warm water-- I would put my son in the infant bathtub and dip him in to rinse him off and then pat dry with a clean cloth. Switch to unscented wipes if you use scented and that should help alot. Good luck to you guys~

It is more than likely a yeast infection on the skin. My daughter used to get horrible yeast infections, and they would start out looking like a typical diaper rash. Nothing but an anti-fungal will clear it up, though. It is amazing how fast the anti-fungals DO work. You should see some noticible healing within 24 hours.

Good Luck,
K.

J.,
Sounds like Yeast to me, My daughter gets the same thing from time to time, especially the first time when I didn't know what it was. Now I treat it with antifungal clotrimazol cream at the first sign, and it goes away within a day or so.
But definately get the doc to take a look.

The diarrhea is more then likely causing the rash. My friends kids have this problem where their rashes actually bleed. Try feeding him yogurt for the proabotics (sp)in it, it was recommended to my daughter last year when she was on heave antibiotics (which also cause diarrhea and rashes). Also, when you change his diaper don't use the wipes full of chemicals. Either rinse them, use a wash cloth with water, or (this may sound disgusting, but probably feels really good) run him under the sink to rinse. Those wipes hurt if you have an owey down there and wipes.
Lastly, if the weather stays nice, let him run around outside without a diaper for a little while. I would let my daughter in the house, but I don't know how you feel about clean up.
I hope it gets better!

Hi J. - My son was on antibiotics that caused diarrhea and then he had really bad diaper rash. He was walking with his legs open because he was in such pain. What I did was the following:
1. Everytime I changed his daper, I used a towel w/ warm soapy water instead of wipes;
2. I let him run around naked for awhile to air dry his skin before I put another diaper back on him;
3. I coat his diaper rash area with desitin before I put a diaper back on him, and I mean, a thick coat (because that protects the skin from diaper / clothing frictions.

good luck!

Hi J.,

it's more than likly the runs that is causing it, but it can also be yeast. This can happen when they take antibiotics, or when they simply have the runs. Try an antifungal. Like for athletes foot. Your dr can tell you which one. I use the store brand, nothing expensive...apply 4 times a day rash was almost gone by the 3rd day...hope this helps! -D. :)

our daughter had a really bad rash around that age and the doc had us try mixing 1/2 monistat and 1/2 anitfungal cream. when that didn't work he gave us a prescription that took the rash away in a few days. good luck. also, try to keep his diaper off for a little while to give his little booty some fresh air.

My daughter has very sensitive skin. when she was born we were using Huggins and destine, and many other rash creams. we switched her to cloth and the rash cleared up right away. cloth is a lot of work so we tried seventh generation diapers and they work great. we also now use weleda diaper cream, any other cream always makes her rash worse. the stuff is amazing!
Whole foods has the best price on the weleda cream and raleys has a good price on the diapers. give it a try. i also thought my baby had yeast, and maybe she did but the right diapers and cream was what made it stay away. oh ya change the diaper almost every hour and lots of diaper free time!!!
good luck
