Please Help! Worried About Chantix...

My hubby is trying to quit smoking and he did on his own for a while (about 5 months) and then he got back from a trip and started again. He has a RX for Chantix that he wants to try. His doc told him that if he has suicidal thoughts or a list of these other side effects that I am to take him to the ER. My worry is about all the stuff that I have read online. There are websites that say if there are (or ever were) psychological problems that they can return or get worse. He has been diagnosed with ADHD and depression. We've been trying to treat those and while he is smoking, his mood is ok, but when he is not he has a very short temper and is moody a lot. That is why I am worried that with him not smoking and this drug having certain side effects, that everything is going to get worse. Adding to the mix is the fact that I am 8 months prego with #4 and have a lot of stressors right now aside from the smoking thing. This is just not a very good time for him to flip out on this drug. What I am looking for is advise from anyone who has taken this drug or knows someone who has and if it is really as bad as the internet makes it out to be. And also if it helped them quit. Thanks for reading! :)

Unfortunately, I don't have much else to suggest - I haven't had to battle quitting smoking, and I only know a few people who have, and when they quit, being short-tempered came with it.

You might try talking to the pharmacist - ask if it's something that's prescribed very often, if they've heard anything about side effects, if the people taking it have had much luck with it, what the most common side effects are, is there anything that can be done to offset the side-effects at all, etc. I'd also ask a few different pharmacists too.

I'm sorry that I am responding to this and have no real advice...I do have an aunt that smoked for over 30 years and used Chantix with no problem except continual gas!! But I have also read the stories of the strange dreams and thoughts and tendencies...You know, that could be true of any drug. I do also have a prescription for Chantix, that I have held on to for about four months now...My son has asthma, and although I do not smoke around him, I know he still inhales some from my clothing and what not...So I thought I would try it out, but haven't yet had the courage, because of the possible side effects, and also, I don't think that I am totally ready yet, and do not plan on quitting just to have to go through it all again. Anyways, if you get any responses to this that would help, or whatever happens with your hubby, I would appreciate some feedback! My aunt is one in a trillion, and I can't go off of her feedback or stuff in magazines alone! Thanks, and I wish you the best!

Okay, my mom was on Chantix for smoking 2x...It does help with the cravings. Eventually, my mother a 25+ year smoker, did in fact quit, for about 6mths. The second time she took it, heres what happened.
Didn't help with cravings, made her stomach hurt ALOT, gave her bad sleep with horrible nightmares, and made her lovable self almost unbearable. Honestly, the first time was wonderful but the second time was horrible. I guess it is HIT or MISS. I hope I was helpful and I hope it works for your hubby. I use to be a smoker until I had my baby(it has been just over a year for me to quit.) Some other advice since my fiance never smoked...Don't judge!! Don't be too critical of him and be understanding if he needs a cig, trust me, once your addicted it is the HARDEST habit to break.

I have been taking chantix since june 10. I smoked my last cigarette on the 17th. I have also been on depression meds for years and did not notice any affects of the chantix on these issues. My only troublesome side affect was it made me horribly nauseated. I would recommend this med and have to many people. Good luck

my husband has been a smoker for the past 25+ years. He had to stop smoking to have a surgery done on his back. Anyways, while taking the medicine for a full 30 days he felt horrible. stomach cramps, headaches, the nightmares were the worst! His attitude was so different he was negative about everything. He fell into depression fast! May first was when he started the medicine by June 1 he was off the medicine and has never took it again. He had told me that he felt like someone was just taking over his body and mental state of mind. I understand about the mood swings that can happen it is a normal thing when someone is trying to stop an addiction. I used to be a smoker I have been smoke free for 6 almost 7 years. Since my husband has been doing so well the doctor did his surgery on his back. But yes he does have the occassional cigar now. maybe one or two a week. Just bear with your husband. He has beared with you through all the baby bearing days with you. I understand that it is a stressfull time for you. But just be happy that you have a husband that is trying to get a little more healthy! If he needs the meds to help him from falling into the depression then he needs to tell his doctor as soon or as soon as you see it coming on. Or see if there is another medicine that might help him with the cravings.

My mom took the medicine and it did not bother her at all. But one thing you have to remember is that The Person Needs to WANT to stop smoking. My mom did not want to stop so she is back at it. it is not because the meds did not work you just have to set your mind to it and want to do it.

good luck with the new baby. and I hope you hubby has a better experience with the meds than my hubby did, everyone is different.
