Hi, my son got sick again today. He has been getting sick every month for the past 9 months. His pedatrician is Dr. Ianelli over here at Lake Ray Hubbard Pediatrics. I have been very pleased with them thus far but we are still new to Texas. Recently my son's pedi and I decided it is possibly allergies. He is now on singulair, benadryl, and claritin. We had just started this regiment one month ago, almost to the day. We thought he was better, no sneezing or runny nose since the singulair kicked in. My husband had asthma as a child and we both have bad allergies. Hence the decision to try this route. He has been on Zithromax twice now, January and February, I really don't want to give him another round of the most potent antibiotic for them right now. We do give him Immune Booster Gummies, Fish Oils, and Multi. Has anybody encountered this problem. Is it thanks to Texas weather. Do you recommend I get a second opinion from ear, nose, throat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance

If it is allergies it would make sense that it would have flared up in the last few days. My sons have terrible allergies and those have flared in the last few days, as have my own. The pollen count is quite high. My boys do seem to respond well to Zyrtec. If you want to get an opinion from an ENT, I highly recommend Dr. Tim Trone at Medical City; he has been a big help to my family. You may also want to get your pediatrician to refer you to a pulmonary specialist and/or give you a presciption for some breathing treatments. Antibiotics are fine if he had an infection, but if your pedi is prescribing antibiotics for congestion and runny nose, you may want to consider changing pediatricians. But perhaps he had an ear infection or an upper respiratory infection? My sons initially got a round of great antibiotics and seemed to get better but got worse really quickly once the treatment stopped. I now think it was a really bad cold plus allergies; the antibiotics helped a little but did not cure the problem. good luck I know it's tough. Also remember vicks on the chest and cool air humidifier.

Mine kept getting chest infections like pneumonia or similar. It turned out to be that he was aspirating which means that some of his food (thin liquids) was quietly going down the wrong pipe and getting into his lungs. Apparently it happens alot with kids and often goes unnoticed. It doesn't take much in the lungs to be a problem. If yours' starts out with the first signs being a running nose, it's probably not the same thing. But if you think it might be aspiration, a barium swallow study is the way to tell for sure.

Caroline you gave the orginal post some great sugguestion. Regarding the nasal rinse, what brand did you use and where did you find it,as I have heard a lot lately about nasal rinses seem to do great as oppose to saline sprays.

I have had this problem. My son was diagnosed with viral triggered Asthma. A great pediatric allergist & imunolgist is Dr. Ruff. I don't think your son should be on all of those antihistamines at once. One antihistimamine should be enough. I find that Rescon GG works better than any prescription brand. It is less harsh & works on the eustation tubes and a brocho decongestant. We use it when needed in conjuction with Nasonex & regular saline & steamy showers.

I wouldn't hesitate with an ENT - I love Dr. William Cobb - he has a office in Plano & Frisco. Good luck!
