My doctor wants my 6 month old to get the pneumonia vaccine. I am a stay at home mom and he attends 2 playgroups, Gymboree, Church and healthclub daycare. I don't know a lot about the vaccine and questioning whether or not he needs ANOTHER one. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I am not a vaccination supporter, especially for an infant. You didn't state if you are breastfeeding or not. If you are, breastmilk is the greatest protection. Germs and illness are a part of our world and there is nothing wrong with that. Colds strengthen our immune system. I would recommend Dr.Feder's new vaccine book. Hi Tara,
The best thing you can do about vaccinations is inform yourself and then make YOUR INFORMED DECISION. Some parents vaccinated thier kids with everything, some are partial vaccinators(like me), and some just don't vaccinate at all.
Read everything you can about this vaccine. I have 2 kids, 4 and 8. I didn't vaccinated them till they were 2 yrs old. The bodies of babies are not done growing inside when they are born! Why inject them with lots of stuff before they really get a chance to fully grow? If you are a stay at home mom( I am!) and don't really get out into public, and you feel your baby has a strong immune sytem, I would question the doctor's decision. I nursed my kids 3 yrs each and the reason I didn't stop early was because I'd end up nurseing them thru cold and flu season. They didn't get sick. I even nursed while I had the intestinal flu and my son did not get it. Just inform youself and know that you know your baby best. The doctor does not see your baby everyday like you do. The other thing is if you completely trust your doctor or not. If you have doubts get a new doctor.
I hope this helps, sorry to ramble on! Best of luck
K. M.

Dear TB,

Yes, you do. Pneumonia is a killer and infact is the main killer even above cancer and aids.

I was so happy when I found out that there was a vaccination for pneumonia.

A lot has changed since then and as opposed to 20 yrs ago they only required 20 something shots and now it is up to 30 ?? Not sure .I don't have whole lot of time to go into it.. but you are "good to question it" Do a little more research check out her book. It regards that issue and how she thinks the vaccinactions relate to her son's autisim which is mostly cured...now because of her finding's It was on Fox News LA wih Steve Edwards, Julian and Dorothy.. My daughter got pneumonia at nine months. I treated her with accupunture and herbs plus western medicine......I don't know much about the vaccine.....But she was a sick little child and she got better......but it was difficult to see her so tiny and so sick..........and unfortunately to be an active person and having to leave your little ones occassionally does have a price......as well as being active in playgroups.

You'd be surprised at what your 6 month old can pick up. While you're a stay at home mom and he attends 2 playgroups, Gymboree, Church and health club daycare. What about shopping, your husband and who he comes into contact with and the other things that you come into contact with that our adult bodies can fight off, but our children can't. Think about it and decide if it's right for your family

Hi Tara, I chose not to do this b/c I think little colds are good to build their immune systems. What we do instead is the Nasopure nasal lavage- its a saline rinse that really helps cut downs colds. One squirt in each nostril at bath time. Make the saline with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp baking soda to a 1/2 cup warm purified water. My son has been getting this since his first cold so hes used to it and doesnt mind. It may take a little time for your babe to get used to it. You can order the bottle online and make the solution yourself. Make sure your babe is sitting up and that the nozzle is pointed up and toward the opposite nostril. Of course washing hands alot too. Hope this helps!

First of all, I would urge you to be very, very cautious re; accepting medical advice from non-medical professionals. Even if someone say their doctor said something, they could be remembering it wrong, or have an ancient doctor who has been doing things the same way for 30 years, when we know better now.

Having said that, we are planning to delay vaccines and only do selected ones, and we are doing pneumonia. It is a very, very common disease, and with all of the places your child goes where there are many young kids he is sure to be exposed. If it goes into the bloodstream he has a 20% chance of dying. It also is the most common cause of meningitis. If he gets that, there is a 30% chance of death, and possible brain damage/hearing loss if he survives. I highly recommend the new book The Vaccine Book by Dr Sears, which is where I got this info from. It can really help you decide which shots to do, when.

BTW, pneumonia is bacterial, and colds are viral, so the poster who said she didn't get this because she wants her kid to get colds is confused.

the doctor probably means the "PCV: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine" which protects against serious pneumococcal infections etc. You can research it and do a google search. It's part of the typical vaccination schedule for a baby's age per their well baby check-up's. Here's a link you can read about it:
http://www.parents.com/parents/category.jsp?categoryid=/t...
or this one: http://www.healthline.com/search?q1=pneumonia%20vaccine&a...
or this one: http://www.kidsgrowth.com/resources/articledetail.cfm?id=...
Each Parent is different. Research and read about it, then you can decide what is best for your baby. Bear in mind, that in the 1st year of life, and in the years after that, there is a typical vaccination schedule for children which is routine. Later, when your child starts to attend school, per each state, vaccinations are required for attendance, or they may not be able to attend. You can read about it ahead of time, and then at least have the knowledge about it, before you go to the doctor. Since your baby attends several play groups & daycare, he/she would be more exposed to "germs" and other babies who are sick. I would suggest at least getting the knowledge about these vaccinations, and then deciding or asking your doctor about it. Good luck...

Hi Tara ... The reason your doc suggested it is because your baby is around a lot of people on a daily basis and with cold and flu season coming up the baby is bound to get sick. Better safe than sorry. We started going to gymboree when my daughter was 14 months old, and until then had never gotten sick. After her first major cold the doc suggested she get the vaccine as well, and hadnt gotten sick since then. It's another poke, but so worth it in the long run.
