Definitely an enzymatic pet product. That (poop) is what they are made for.
Good luck. If not, call Stanley Steemer.
We survived a 4-day bout with a stomach virus/ear infection, but our area rug took a...um.."hit" when he just couldn't make it to the potty. I have scrubbed and "Resolved"... still stinks! Any suggestions or should I just call the pros?
The pet enzyme product worked wonders! We used it the other night and then my husband took the rug outside and soaked the spot and left it in the sun to dry. Thank you all!

Try Nature's Miracle (pet product). Worked when my dog got skunked.
OR peroxide & baking soda.
Try on an inconspicuous spot first (like in a closet).
You can rent a RugDoctor for pretty cheap and get the stain out yourself, companies charge a fortune for coming to your house.
I would borrow a carpet cleaner or rent one. Our Bissel Pro heat has gotten animal accidents out well. I would also look for Nature's Miracle.
Saturate the area with vinegar and let sit for a few minutes. Sweep up with shopvac. Pour baking soda on it and rub it in really good. Let dry overnight. Sweep up. My son had a major blowout on our carpet in the playroom and it worked on that!
We've had a lot of success with renting a RugDoctor. Our dog always had stomach issues. After awhile we decided to buy a Bissell cleaner and it works wonders! Great for spot cleaning!
I've had really good luck with Woolite Heavy Traffic- I've never had to contend with poo though- but it works really well on urine and vomit.
Good luck! :)
All of the suggestions work well that you have been given. I use vinegar on ALL my "stinky" things, the couch, the rug, the bed, the clothes, have thought about using it on me lol. The pet enzyme ones can leave their own smell as well, to get that out (if you dont like it of course! I never did) sprinkle the whole carpet with baking soda, let sit for a few hours, and vac up. With it being an area rug, you might need to lift the rug and check the floor under as well, make sure that is cleaned well too.
Good luck!! Glad he is feeling better too!!
Nature's Miracle or another enzyme pet product. You have to thoroughly soak it, and you may have to do it more than once. The enzymes work when it's wet. I take a wet (with water) rag, scrub at the spot with the enzyme product for a while, and then spray it some more when I'm done and leave to dry.
I used Hydrogen Peroxide on our carpet when my daughter had an accident. It took it right out. It might lighten your carpet, especially if you have a dark color carpet.
Try a pet enzyme stain/odor remover?
Since it is an area rug, I suggest hanging it outdoors and spraying it with a generous dose of Fabreeze. Leave it outside in the sun for a couple of days. When I was pregnant, I threw up for the entire nine months and had a couple of missed targets. Fabreeze saved my car and the cushions on a chair.
I would rent a steam cleaner.
