Pool Alarm

I am considering purchasing a turtle pool alarm wristband for my 18 months old daughter. Does anyone have any experiences or have any feedback on this product? We have a pool and a little koi pond in our yard and I'm a little worry, especially when she has 2 older brothers who at times had to be reminded to close the gate to the pool. My two boys know not to go in/around the pool unless an adult is present.

Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

If I were you and had older kids who "had to be reminded to close the gate" I would lock the gate and not give them unlimited access. To many kids drown like this.

i have never heard of those but with the pool gate if it can be afforded maybe get a gate door that self closes so you dont have to worry about it not getting closed. maybe put a little 2 foot fence around the koi pond till she knows not to go near it.

Hi T.,

A quick google search took me to this http://www.improvementscatalog.com/home/diy/spring-loaded...

Certainly you are concerned with your own little one, but you have to worry about other children too.

Sorry, no information about a turtle alarm.

Safety experts recommend many barriers of alarm for water. For instance, pool cover, pool secured behind locked gate, safety locks on house doors leading to outside water. One barrier alone isn't sufficient. Nothing is failsafe.

Any barrier you get in order to protect your child/ren is better then not having anything in place at all for sure. I do a lot of education on drowning prevention and my friend and co worker lost her son to a dronwing several years ago. The issue we see with the Turtle is that the child already has to be in the water before it alerts. The best suggestion for parents who have small chidren and pools or other water sources is to use an isolation fence with a self-closing, self-latching mechanism. Drownings happen so quickly...If you cannot afford that, (because that is quite expensive), it is suggested to use multiple layers of barriers. (such as a door alarm with the Turtle, pool cover, etc.)

The turtle alarm looks great! However, as someone else mentioned, we need to be concerned about the safety of all the little ones. We have a small hot tub/waterfall feature in our home. We put up a removable gate with a self-closing latch. It is not the most beautiful addition to the yard, but when we have larger adult parties we can remove the fencing in about 15 minutes. It is really sturdy and keeps the little ones out and safe. I know it is more than the turtle alarm, but something to consider, especially if your little ones are allowed to roam outside in your yard without you right there. Good luck!

We have a Turtle alarm - and it works great. We bought when my 2 1/2 year old nice was visiting for 2 weeks. She loved the fact that she has a "special" turtle braclet to wear and we loved that a loud alarm went off if she got it wet. I recommend.

Have you checked out the videos on www.youtube.com about babies and pools? Just google Infant Swimming Resource or Harvey Barnett. I'm hoping they'll have a teacher in my area soon (central coast). I agree that all safety measures need to be taken (gates, fences, alarms), too. Good luck and have a great summer!

Hi T.,
I can't say I know about the turtle pool alarm product, however, my mother in law works for a company called vacalert. It's now a federal law for commercial pools and will soon be, or already is, a federal law for residential pools to have this product. It is for the drain of the pool. The pressure of the drain can pull 400lbs. of pressure. Anyway, several people have been killed by drowning because of this and that's why they're making it a federal law. Where my MIL works is the distributor of it and though it's not what you're asking about, it may be worth looking into. If you're interested I can get the number for you and you can find out more info. I hope you find what you're looking for. Enjoy the pool during these hot days!
