Poop Help

Hi moms,

I don't quite know how to explain our problem but i'll try. My 2 year old son has been having a hard time going to the bathroom today. He is going in tiny little bits which is not usual for him. What comes out is pretty sticky but does not seem hard so I don't think he is constipated. He has also been farting a lot and the farts are also pushing out tiny bits of poop (skidmarks?). This has caused his bottom to be completely raw and painful. Any ideas how to get him back to a normal bowel movement really quickly?

My 3yr old has had poop problems for a long time. She's fine now but she used to hold it and wouldn't allow herself to go. Anyway, to get the poop out right now when he is trying to go, try the Pedia-Lax liquid glycerine suppositories. They work really fast. My daughter would go in like 30 seconds after having that inserted and because it's glycerin, everything comes out really slippery and easily. I never had to use all of it either. Just one squirt from the bulb is all I ever gave her and it worked fine. I also would squirt a little glycerin out onto her rectum before I inserted it for easier placement.

Emergently you can have him sit in a warm bath tub and this might realx his rectal sphincter enough that he can poop in the bath tub. Messy to clean up, but he will be comfortable. Increase his dietary fiber and fluids, no juices, water will work, ANY water!

Miralax. It will help and is the least invasive method, believe me. There is only one kind, for adults & kids, and you can give your two year old (at least my ped. said about my two year old) a full adult dose if he is constipated, and then you can ramp back down.

Good luck!

That's exactly what happens when my daughter (same age) is constipated--the first time it happened I thought she had diarreah or something and was trying to hold it in! Eventually a big fairly solid poop came out (though not as hard as I expected), and the mystery was solved. Though her diet is high in fruits, veggies and whole grains, she still gets constipated occasionally. When it happens I restrict her snacks to prunes, dried apricots, fresh and dried berries, encourage her to drink lots of water, and limit juice and dairy products (apple juice is constipating, so don't give it to him--and prunes are 10X better than prune juice in relieving constipation). I also try to get her moving a lot, like swimming, bouncing, running, etc. Then whenever she strains to poop (and gets upset), I hold her hands, try to help her bend over a little, rub her back, and encourage her to relax and let it come out (I think she fights it because it hurts). Sometimes I let her have a little of my coffee in the morning too if she's constipated--not that coffee's great for little ones, but I reasoned a couple of sips might help more than hurt! Also, whenever the skidmarks show up, I coat her bottom with Aquaphor after every diaper change, because if I don't it gets raw and painful down there, too. Good luck!

He could still be constipated - sometimes they get "blocked" and then a little bit gets around the blockage. I would try stuff to relieve constipation - juice, prunes, fruit, peas, etc. If that doesn't work you could try Mirilax (it's over the counter, though I'm not sure if dosing info is on it for kids). When my daughter used to have trouble with constipation, this stuff worked miracles. At the time it was prescription only though so I had the proper dosing info. You might call the pediatrician to make sure before you try it.

Hi, I'm an adult whose stomach behaves like this. One doctor told me it was my personality - getting anxious, eating too fast etc. Candied ginger or ginger tea would help. Lots of hot liquid and also exercise.

Skidmarks are a sign of constipation. Try prune juice, double fiber bread, lots of fresh fuit and lots of water.

Hi H.,

Water is the key along with fruit. I would look into healthy water. Alkaline water is the best. Your body absorbs it better.

If you want more info let me know.

My 2 year old has the exact same problem, and I do think it's constipation. I give him Miralax every day at his dr's recommendation, and it totally solves the problem. I wish I didn't have to give him something every day, but he eats lots of fiber so there wasn't really anything else I could do. It only takes a little bit and I put it in his drink, he doesn't even notice it.

Hi H.-
I would try no bananas (if he is eating them) and maybe give him a little miralax. This is what my sister does with her son. I hope it helps.

Kiwis! Kiwis will get him flowing in no time. We have them as Part of the kids' morning smoothie. We also just recently started giving our 3 year old probiotics everyday and she's going like crazy. As a bonus, an article just came out in "Pediatrics" linking probiotics to a stronger immune system. Maybe something to try. We got ours at our local natural foods store but I think Raley's has a liquid one that might work ( you could throw it in that smoothie along with the kiwis). Good luck.

This happens to my 2 year old sometimes even though he eats TONS of fruit. On days like this I give him YoBaby yogurt and prune juice and by the next day - watch out!!! The probiotics in the yogurt help get everything moving and also help tremendously with any diaper rash that may occur by "upping the good bateria" so to speak. Have your little one dip apples and grapes into the yummy yogurt (they have lots of good flavors too) and the kids are getting fiber (which help them poop) too with the apples - yum yum!!

I echo what your other two respondents have said re using fruits and veggies to help get him back on track. I also recommend that you think back to what he's eaten in the last couple of days to see if you can identify any pattern that may have led to this problem. Also be sure you think about how much he's been drinking. Often a problem of this type comes about because we neglect to get enough liquids into our systems. I would definitely use all the nutritional methods for a couple of days before resorting to any type of laxatives.

Hi.
First I would talk to the DR about it. If they don't have any good ideas then I can present a few here:
Psyllium is a great tool to help the bowel with digestion and formation of the stool. You could grind up about a 1/4 teaspoon and add it to his yogurt, cereal or even make a little smoothie. You could also add some flaxseed and other yummy things to a smoothie.
Calendula is good for the raw bootie. Also great is Earth Mama Baby Angels Baby Bottom Cream.
He might have an allergy to something being eaten daily. This would have to be evaluated by the doctor.
Good luck.

Lots of liquids, popsicles, and high fiber - I recommend Cracklin Oat Bran cereal. Also apples, pears. If you can get him to eat drink/prune stuff that supposed to be the best. Also, use the wet flushable wipes and maybe vaseline and some baths?

Aloe vera is a great for the digestive system and is a mild laxitive. You need to get it in the pill form which might be hard for your little one. Try to open the capsel and mix it in with juice or water.
