Dear Moms, I am dealing with a 3 years old boy quite resistant to pooping in the potty (I know, I am not the only one out there!)...he insists that I leave him alone when he is "focusing" on his "job" (he will not let me get close to him) and he doesn't care where he is at that moment...well, today he happend to go on the colorful rug in his playroom. Oh, it was not fun. My question: how do I clean/sanitize the rug, which has a rubber back that I don't want to ruin in the washing machine? Thank you so much for your advice!

My son is a private pooper too. He does not like anyone in the bathroom with him when he goes. He even tries to kick me out of public bathroom stales!!

I know this has nothing to do with your problem of the rug, but you need to make your son understand that this is not ok and next time there will be a punishment for it. He is well old enough to know what it feels like to need to go poop and to inform and adult so he can be taken to a bathroom. This is a power struggle for your son and he is winning. It gives him a form of control over something that you want him to do.

Now on to the rug, even with the rubber backing (I'm assuming like a bathroom rug) you can put it in the washing machine with some laundry soap as a pre treat or shout. A front load machine would be best but a top loader will do as long as it will fit. If it's a big rug, take it to the laundry mat and put it in one of those super jumbo machines. Wash on cold and let it air dry. Putting it in the dryer is what will hurt the backing.

Hope this helps and good luck with your son!

Oxyclean! The good old fashion kind of mixing the powder and water. It's a miracle potion with a little salute to Billy Mays;)

I'm not clear on how this all went down, but I certainly would NOT allow him to be without a pullup or pants on unless he's on the potty (or at least in the bathroom)! I have a 3 year old boy who, over the last 2 years, has "delved" into his diaper a few times and made a huge mess. We had to rent a steam cleaner for one episode. I "prep" the area by using lots of Renuzit spot carpet and upholstery cleaner and LYSOL -lots and lots of Lysol! We then steam cleaned and everything was fine.

My boy is potty trained now, but it took awhile to get him all the way there. He likes to be left alone on the potty with the door closed, and then he'll let you know to come help wipe him up. I would make it clear to your child that he can have his pants off when he's in the bathroom and on the potty, but nowhere else. Tell him the potty is the ONLY place he can "focus on his job"! At this age they will work you when they can, and since they're still so little, it's sometimes hard to believe! Pick him up and take him to the potty and take his pants off and put him on there. Tell him when he starts going in the potty like a big boy the way he's supposed to, then you'll leave him alone to concentrate on his job.

there are many housebreaking stain and oder neutralizing sprays for puppies thats what we have always used they are specially formulated to neutralize and sanitize feces. I know you were not asking for potty training advice but I would make sure he helps in the clean up maybe not with the sprays them selves but in help removing the poop and stuff like that his hands can always be washed, it seems like he may be giving you a power struggle you might want to back off and tell him he will need to wear diapers ( may backfire if he would actually rather be in diapers still), if he chooses to not use his potty b/c its not ok to use the floor as a bathroom, I know accidents happen but it sounds like he may be purposly doing this. Any ways good luck and the puppy spray should help with the messes along the way (they ususally neutralize urine as well)

I have had my years of dealing with poop situations and I have 3 boys. I agree a front load washer at the laundry mat is best and i have found that using baking load you can keep on hand from like sam's in a 12lb bag ( it cost about $5.28) helps with the laundry detergent helps boost it and gets smell out best.

Until my two dogs passed away, I let them spend the night(during the winter) in my utility room. I used a natural product to eliminate the urine and bowel movement odor. Contact me to learn more about this natural product and others.
