Hey moms! My little will be 3 months on the 12th. Up until 2 weeks ago she was having a BM 2-3 times daily. It was usually watery and would blow out her diaper. About 1 1/2 weeks ago she had a BM that was peanut butter consistency. She then went 6 days without going. Her tummy didn't seem to bother her but she has constant audible, terribly smelly gas. After 6 days she finally had another BM on Sat. that was pb consistency. Nothing since except gas. I am breastfeeding. Is this normal or is something wrong?

Thanks for the help.

M.

Sounds like your little girly is an efficient digester! Breastfed babies can go a week or more without a BM because they're eating the perfect food and their little bodies can use every bit of the good nutrients in there. My daughter did the same thing at that age. I worried and asked her ped and he said it was perfectly normal and healthy for a BF baby to go that long - makes diaper changes so much easier, but after that week... look out! :)

It's normal for breastfed babies to go a while in between bowel movements, especially during growth spurts. Her little body is just using up ALL the nutrients it can possibly get from your milk.

Have you noticed any change in her eating pattern? Is she still having plenty of wet diapers?

Our doctor told us that going as long as 5-7 days in between bowel movements is OK, as long as our baby didn't seem to be in any pain. Your daughter is on the long side of that, so you should probably check with your pediatrician just to be safe. My guess would be that she's just fine though.

I breast fed my child and she is now 21 months old. She still seemed to love it a lot.(Though she got only 1 time a day). I would not worry much as breastfeed baby tend to have a lot of gas. I remembered everytime she goes, the sound is exactly like gas explord :-) in her diaper and it sometimes has the look of sesame seed. Good luck on your breastfeed journey and enjoy the gift of GOD.

I had a similar situation with my daughter at about 2 months of age. I discussed this with my pediatrician who told me that it was perfectly normal for an exclusively breastfed baby to go up to 10 days without a bowel movement.
