I left my test on bathroom counter at 3pm. After 1minute I thought its going to be negative so I left. I couldn't shake the fact that I've had symptoms and my period is late. So I kept looking online for the answers. I asked a question on this site about medication effecting test results. A responder gave me a link to a website for the answer. I went back into the bathroom to look at the insert from the pregnancy test as a responder said that she did. I look down at the pregnancy test I took and there was a faint line. This was at 8:50pm. Do you think this can bea false positive?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the post I definitely appreciate it. Last night I had to know so I took a test and it was negative. This morning I went to the dollar tree store to pick up a pregnancy test so I can test with morning urine and it was positive. Faint line but definitely there.

While false positives are VERY rare, this is likely an evaporation line. You HAVE TO read the test within the time limit specified on the package.
Take another test, preferable in a few days.
Good luck!

In my experience ANY line is a positive. Even if it is super light. There are also more false negatives than false positives.

Take another test in a few days. I bought a three pack of tests so I would definetly be 100% positive weather or not I am pregnant. I took one on a friday and it said negative. Monday, it said positive, and thursday positive again. I waited the 3 min for the results and not 5 hours later. I am now 8 months (33 weeks) pregnant. Tests today are pretty accurate and once it turns positive, it won't turn to a negative. Negative test results could change to a positive. I think either take another test or just see a doctor. ;) good luck and throw away your test within 10 min after you see the results to avoid confusion. Maybe a housefly landes on it and is now pregnant...just kidding.

The results of a pregnancy test are only valid for a few minutes after the test is performed. If you wait too long to look at the test, the results can appear to turn to a false positive.

Wait a few days and take another test. If you are still having questions, get a blood test for an absolute answer. Good luck.

Take another test. Same thing happened to me just a few weeks ago. I threw it away after a minute, looked an hour later and it was postive. Took 4 more tests that week, all negative. Got my period 2 weeks later. Crazy!

If you are pregnant, another test will turn out positive and you won't have to wonder! Good luck!

When I got pregnant with my first child, the first test I did looked negative. I did another one two days later which showed a very slight line (my husband thought it was none, I insisted there was one). I ended up going to the pharmacy to have the test done there and it was indeed positive.
With both pregnancies I knew that I was pregnant way before the tests showed positive.
Maybe one of those digital tests may be more helpful.

My last pregnancy was a surprise and I too was thinking/hoping the test was wrong. I called the dr and was told that except for very very very rare cases, a positive result is just that - positive. The test is looking for hcg, and the only time your body has it is when you ARE pregnant, unless you are having some fertility treatments. Basically, the test is wrong is when it gives you a negative because your body hasn't developed enough hcg to be detected yet.
However: perhaps you should take another. Because "For accuracy in home pregnancy tests it is essential that you read the test results in the stipulated reaction time. If you let the test sit for too long (after the instructions on the box tell you), the test is invalid. This may cause it to show false positive results."

Yes, especially if it's a blue dye test or a dollar store test. Best to retest in the morning and check it at 5 & 9 minutes.

My doctor had informed me that not all pregnancy tests are created equal. The test that is the most accurate is the Clear Blue Easy digital. It can test you 5-7 days before your missed period.
Also, the tests need to be read only in the time allotted. I have had the same thing happen and thought I was pregnant, but only because I read the test outside of the time frame.
Finally, because the test reads hormones within the body, you may need to take the test multiple times to allow your body to build up enough of it that it will show on the test.

I had a similiar experience. I took a test. It was negative after the one minute, so I threw it in the trash. An hour or so later, my husband saw it siiting on top of the trash and told me I was pregnant. There was a bit of a line there. I was not pregnant, though. I don't think you are supposed to go by what it looks like after the recommened time frame.

Take another one.

One of mine looked negative, so I threw it in the trash and went about my day, but something kept nagging me to go back and check, so I did. It was positive, but was past the time frame on the instructions. I took another one and it was positive.

Good luck!

Pregnancy tests are very accurate and there is no such thing as a "false positive".. but like anything you have to use the test correctly. Tests are usually meant to be read 1-10m after using. When you let a test sit for hours you can get a line they call "evap" lines. Evaporation lines have gotten a lot of hopes up.. but it is not a positive. Google evap lines to see images of what it looks like when tests that do this.

Just take another test so you will know for sure. Good luck!

I would take another test just to clear your mind. When I my pregnancy test with my son, it was the faintest of lines, and you could only see it if you held it up and twisted it sideways. Very wierd. Anyway, I was pregnant and the test looked wierd.

Good luck to you.

I have taken a pregnancy test before that was negative, but after a few hours sitting in my trashcan it had a line like it was positive. I was not pregnant, so the negative was correct. I would not go by anything you saw several hours later.

As far as the medication question, call your pharmacist tomorrow and ask them whether your antibiotics can affect the accuracy of the test. They will be able to tell you best. And obviously, retest in a few days if you are still late. But only if the pharmacist says the prescription wont affect a home test.
