Has anyone had a baby have an allergic reaction to an arrowroot cookie? I gave one to my baby tonight for the first time and his face got all splotchy red around his mouth and it was warm to the touch. It seems to have cleared up now, but I am still worried about him and don't want there to be a chance he might stop breathing. I am worried about anaphylatic shock, should I be? He also has a temp of 99.9. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

So What Happened?

Ok, so I did call the on call doc (luckily, it was our doc) and he said if he is OK now, he will be fine. He has never heard of having an allergic reaction to this type of cookie. I will try giving him a cookie in a few days and see what happens. Thanks!!

Was it the first time he had the cookie? Does the package say that it was produced in a factory that may cross contaminate with nuts etc? If he is fine now, I wouldn't worry. But you could always call the doc on call. Or at least call the doc tomorrow.

The only common allergen in arrowroot cookies is wheat (on the vanilla ones). It's possible your son is allergic to wheat or one of the other ingredients. Has he ever had these cookies before? If you do think its an allergy, be careful because many allergic reactions get worse on each exposure.

If you're concerned, give your son some baby benadryl. By now you'd already know if he had an anaphylactic reaction. You can google the ingredients in the cookies to determine what you might need to look out for in the future. And certainly talk to your pediatrician about allergy testing if you don't determine this is something else.

Well my daughter is allergic to Kiwi fruit.
She used to eat it fine, then one day, REACTION to it.
Allergic reactions to it, can be very dangerous. ie: swelling of throat and mouth, hence can't breathe.
