My daughter had some bites of an ebelskiver (a filled pancake) which is made with egg whites. (we were given the ok to try any foods as a recent study showed no increase in prevalence of allergies if you delay certain foods) So, she developed a sandpaper like rash and redness around her mouth, her hand and up her arm. (one sided, the side she used to pick up the pieces of food). It took over a week to fully go away. We have an appointment with the pedi for her well visit later. Does this sound typical of an allergy? Do you think they'll have me try egg whites again or would we be referred to an allergist?
I took her in for her well visit and the doctor agreed that it was probably the egg. She only had a couple very small bites of the doughy part of the pancake (not any filling-banana). She's had wheat before so it wasn't that. He said we should just avoid eggs until she's a year, then we can try again and if she has a reaction, we'll have her tested. Forgot to say she's 9 months old.
Sounds like an allergy, but not necessarily to egg whites. What was the pancake filled with? Strawberry is a rather common allergy as well. But childhood allergies are commonly outgrown by 5 or 6.
I agree that it does sound like an egg allergy. My son is allergic to egg whites and it was very obvious the first time he had eggs. I would talk to your ped. about it first. They will probably have you stay away from eggs for a while at least.
My daughter had a severe allergic reaction to eggs when she had them for the first time when she was 1yr. She had a red rash that looked like hives around the mouth, hands, any where that the egg touched. We gave her benadryl right away and still took a week to go away. My suggestion is to talk to the pedi to get her tested. My little one outgrew it finally when she was 4yr. I know how scary it is, but its better to know now then if she was at someone elses house and it happened.
I wouldn't necessarily assume it is the egg whites. It could be the wheat in the pancake unless she has already had wheat products. It is hard to say whether the dr. will want allergy testing at this point. You didn't say how old your daughter is. They might just have you wait a while before trying foods one at a time to see which she reacts to. Hope you find some answers.
Yes, it definitely sounds like an egg allergy. A rash shouldn't like so long to go away though - did you give her anything? Ask your pediatrician what the appropriate dose of Benadryl is for her weight, and make sure you always have some on hand.
How old is she? You may want to meet with an allergist to find out if she has other allergies; it is probably safer to know than to just try various foods and keep your fingers crossed.
