Possible Leg/Foot Problem

Several weeks ago we noticed that our 6 month old son will not put his right foot down on any surface. He will immediately pick it up or just put a little pressure on his toes avoiding his heel. We were sent for several x-rays and it revealed (according to his pediatrician) he has inflammation in his foot. We were then referred to a Pediatric Orthopedist. He was examined and then sent for labs to test for any type of infection. The labs came back clear and the doctor said that is probably because he is asymmetric and not ready to put weight on his leg/foot. He does, however, put weight on his left leg as a child normally would at his age. Has anyone had this experience? I am not sure where to go from here. I do have an appointment to go back to the doctor in 6 weeks. For some this may seem that I am overly concerned but I do not want anything to stop my son’s progress when it is time for him to walk. Thanks for any advice/help you may be able to give me.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your help. My son started to put his foot down just last week. He now puts full weight on it. Thank you for all of your advice. It sure did pay off.

I do not think you are being overly concerned. I wouldn't be able to wait six weeks. Did the pediatric ortho not confirm the inflammation found by his regular pediatrician? I think I would try another Ped. Ortho. Good luck to you.

Hi A.,
I'm all about second opinions. I don't think you are overly concerned. And, 6 weeks seems like a long time to wait. Is there any way for you to get another medical opinion?
Just my two cents,

When my son experienced a smiliar problem, he had an inquinal hernia, near the groin area. A choirpractor was the one who found it and sent us to a surgeon. He did just fine.
I also believe choirpractors are wonderful for just about anything and have gone since I was a child. I took my children and now they all go, including my grandchildren.
I can reccomend one in Arl. Her name is Dr. Jeanett Kurbin at ###-###-####

I would not wait either, keep pressing. CAnother thought, culd it be sensory related? One thing to try would be to take a baby brush and "brush" the bottom of his foot. I would do it everytime you change his diaper and see if he will begin to put pressure on it. My son has sensory issues and we did a lot of "brushing" on his hands and feet, it worked for us. Can't hurt in the mean time.

Check for a myofascial release Physical therapist. Try integrative pediatric therapy with Sally Fryer. Good luck. Ps Your physician has to write a perscription for the physical therapy , but not the evaluation. This clinic worked on the two Egyptian twins who were cojoined at the head and then seperated a few years back. Good luck.

I wouldn't wait 6 weeks. That is a LONG time to a 6 month old. I would seek a second opinion immediately. I think you are right to be concerned on this one.

Did the pediatric orthopedist give any explaination for the inflammation seen on xray? This dr.'s explaintion of your son's problem, sounds pretty vague. Kind of like he's brushing it off instead of getting to the root of the problem.

also, if you press on his heel does that bother him?

Time to find another Pediactric Orthopedist for a second opinion. Doctors arn't God and can be wrong and I would take a mother's gut feeling over one doctor any day.

Get a referral to Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. You can only be seen there by a referral from your PCP or pediatrician. Before I had my 2 1/2 children I worked as a nurse in a PCP office for 15 yrs. This is a FABULOUS hospital and they have the absolute best dr's! This could be a multitude of things. Hips, knees, feet, etc. Just get him an apt there and get him checked out to help you feel better. It is a NON PROFIT hospital and you pay absolutely nothing! Such a great service provided for us and our children.

I would try taking him to a chiropractor. There is an excellent family practice in Hurst called Lifetime Family Wellness Center, ###-###-####. Both Dr. Jim Bob and his wife Dr. Cindy are excellent. They work on little ones as old as a day to realign any anything needed after a cramped and squished journey like birth. Could be he's had this problem but you weren't aware of it till he started standing. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Take him to a chiropractor. My son started walking with his left foot turned in. I took him to a chiropractor and they found his hip was slightly rotated so now he's getting adjusted and slowly getting better. I was told that sometimes happens if children basically skip crawling and go into walking. I would like to say most chiropractors are free for the initial exam.
