Post Delivery Pain and Discharge

It's been 3 months since I've given birth and one month since I've stopped breastfeeding. I am still suffering from occasional discharge, which (sorry for the gross factor) almost has the consistancy of yellowish phlegm. In addition, I also get sharp pains in my lower abdomen every now and again.

I had asked my doctor during my one month post partum about the discharge and he said that it can happen when your breastfeeding and to "keep an eye on it" and that it didn't look like I had an infection.

It's been about a week from the end of my first period (thank god), but I just went to the bathroom and noticed that I passed some clots in my urine. I've also seem to have passed some dried blood.

Is this normal even after three months??

What can I do next?

I would call your dr again. Not to be gross but does the discharge have a foul odor? That is a big sign of infection. A week after I gave birth to my daughter I noticed a very gross smelll and I had an infection. My blood/discharge was over within a few weeks though.
Def make the call...better to be safe than sorry

Hi C., congrats on your baby girl!! They are just the best thing to happen a woman:) My little guy just turned three!! I breastfed for 6 mo. and didn't get a period and after I stopped a mo. later I got it and then it came three wks. out of every month. My doctor did a biopsy and didn't find anything and tried to change my bc pills and nothing worked. Finally, I went in for a DNC on his 1st bday and found I had an infection in my uterus. It's a scary thing to find out. Definately call your doctor and let him know this worries you so you can make sure everything is alright. Good Luck!!

It doesn't sound normal, especially with the pain. Call your doctor!

I am a mother of four and a postpatum doula, I think you should get a second opinion.

Definitely get the yellow discharge checked, but as far as the bloods passing and clots goes, it may be your body getting back to a routine, especially since you did breast feed for a while. But like anything if you truly are worried better to get the peace of mind and get it checked by a DR.
congrads on your new baby!

Are the dried blood and clots coming from the vagina/uterus, and you just notice them when you go to the bathroom, or are they coming from your urine itself? These are 2 different problems.

It seems to me to be highly unusual to still have blood or clots in the uterus - I think you should check out whether the entire placenta did not come out and you have some retained tissue, with or without infection. Get another check-up, or another opinion from another doctor. If there is blood in the urine, that is a different problem and you need a urinalysis and possibly a visit to a urologist.

After 3 months, "Keep an eye on it" seems too cavalier and casual. Insist on more follow-up.

I wouldn't mess around with that. I don't think it's normal to have discharge that color after three months, especially accompanied by pain. I've known more than a few women who had a piece of the placenta left in their uterus after they delivered and went home. And it's not something to ignore. I don't mean to alarm you. It could also be a harmless yeast infection, but either way, I would have it checked out.

C.----------Change Doctors, obviously he isn't listening to you, or doesn't think that your symptoms are that bad----------How does he know---He is not going through what you are. Which I think ar weird symtoms, and I would march right to my Doctors, and ask for help.
There are Doctors out there, that are there for you! You are #1, and It is your job to take care of your body---even if it means to change Doctors. I have a wonderful primary Doctor, in Attleboro Dr. Justin Loew, and a great OBGYN Dr. Marc Hochler in Foxboro. They both listen to me---we have laughs, their staff are just great---------I actually enjoy going to the doctors. Good luck.

Hi C. - I would definitely call your doc and explain your symptoms. After I had my son (now 2 1/2) I bled for maybe a month or so total, then nothing at all the whole time I breastfed (15 months). It could be perfectly normal, but 3 months later seems a little long to be having those kinds of symptoms to me. Good luck!
