Post Nasal Drip

As a lifelong severe allergy sufferer, I swear by the Zyrtec and take Benadryl at night during spring and hay fever seasons. I find a breathe right strip at night helps me and drink lots of water. It will thin the mucus and help it not burn so much.

The neti pot works wonders for me. I use it every morning and am so grateful I don't need to take medication anymore.

I went to an allergist for this issue last year. Turns out my post nasal drip was due to chronic sinusitis, a sinus infection that did not get properly treated/cleared up. He put me on antibiotics for 3 weeks, I only took a week of them because the yeast infection was ridiculous. Anyway, in the process, he also advised me to mix 2 tsp salt w/ 1 tsp baking soda, add to 8oz of warm water and with a steady flow spray the solution into my nose twice a day. If that water is too hot or salty, this can be painful. But untimately, you are inhaling salt water. You allow the solution to run right back out of your nasal cavity. I belive my solution bottle is from Sinumed, but it's kinda like a douche bottle (horrible comparison, but I had no other way of explaining.) When I actually remember to do this, I do not have post nasal drip. When I forget, I wake up with mucus pooled in my throat and end up vomitting to eliminate it.

My son has had this a lot lately and everytime I put a humidifier in his room, his cough stops overnight.

I will be looking forward to an answer because I have the drip too. And I eat chocolate everyday so I don't think that works..at least not for me. I wish I hated chocolate! lol

G., this may not be very good advice,but what i do is drink a 4-6oz glass of buttermilk a day, and try my best not to drink any or much of any kind of liquid (or as little as posible). this is dehydrateing/ but it stops my nose from running. (you know what they say," starve a cold, feed a fever!"

We raise the head of the bed by placing pillows or books under the mattress and put some Vicks Vaporub on their chests. This works for us when the kids are suffering from post nasal drip associated with head colds.

I use my neti pot and when I have too I eat a piece of chocolate (I hate chocolate) but I think it does something to plug me up and no more post nasal drip. I eat a Hershey kiss or something of that size. A warm bath to help the drainage. I get allergy shots and take prescription medicine when I need it but seriously I think the cocoa makes my "drip" dry up.

We use the sudafed behind the counter stuff (store brands are just as good) with pseudoephedrine. It seems to work pretty well for us.

Try using a neti pot. They are available at places like cvs and walgreens. It's a little tea-pot looking device that you fill with water and use to rinse out your nasal passages. There are directions that come with it. You could also just google "Neti-Pot." It has really helped me with my allergy issues.
