My son is 16 mo and really interested in potty training. He already is telling me when he has to go and running into the bathroom. I went out and purchased a potty chair but because he is still so young and so small the chair is way to big for him and he just falls in the hole. He trys to make it work but it just doesn't. Any suggestions as to a decent potty chair for boys that will work well. Thanks so much in advance and have a great day!

My eldest potty trained really early as well and we had a similar experience. We found that if we had him straddle the toilet, sitting facing the tank, he was able to sit without falling in.

Good luck!

We got the Baby Bjorn Potty Chair ( http://www.google.com/products?q=baby+bjorn+potty+chair&a... ) for our little girl when she was 15 months old. It was still a little big but she did fine as long as I put her on it. Then when she was potty trained and afraid of big toilets, we bought the Baby Bjorn Little Potty ( http://www.google.com/products?q=baby+bjorn+little+potty&... ) to keep in our car for road trips, dinner out, shopping, etc. when she wouldn't use a toilet. I wish we had started with this seat. It's perfect for littler toddlers and babies. In fact, many people use them around the world for EC (elimination communication) with babies as young as a few days old. I highly recommend it and the price can't be beat! :-)

Although my twin boys haven't even got potty in their potty chairs, I feel that the Baby Bjorn potty chairs work the best. They have the best splash guard that I could find. My boys seem to like sitting on it, now if they could just master going potty in it. My mother-in-law mentioned to me that she potty trained her boys by sitting on the toilet backwards and that seemed to work really well for her. Good Luck!

Sitting backwards is a workable way to do it but they need to take their pants off to sit backwards. This is not always practical like at the Mall when they have their shoes on and you do not really want them to touch the toilet seat.

For some boys using the small seat that fits over the adult seat works well. Also the small potty chair already noted is a good idea. The more independent they can be the better in the long run

Hi R.!

I found the Bjorn little potty chair was great for my kids. I picked mine up from the Consignment shop Other Mothers. The kids straddle before squatting on it. Here is a picture:

My son started being interested at roughly the same time. We are still working on bowel movements. He's 2.5 years now. But we've had a move and other upheavals that have slowed our progress. Congrats! and enjoy.

Hi R.,
We got a great seat at Target a few months ago.
It's an adult seat that has the child seat built in. It flips down. This really helped so I did not have to train my ittle one twice (once in the potty chair and once in the big toilet)

we were most successful with putting our son on the regular seat (even when he was 18 months) backwards - not as much falling in potential, more than enough room for aiming!

I have found that potty chairs are just a pain. My oldest was so confused - she couldn't figure out what it for since mom and dad didn't use it. We just bought her a seat for the toilet. For my son, someone gave us a potty chair - he didn't get it either. And my husband just felt too weird about showing him how to use it. I tossed the chair. I got a great piece of advice from other mom's with boys. Put him on the seat backwards, facing the tank. They are more secure because they can use the front of the toilet seat to put their bum on the transition to standing and facing the toilet is easier. And if they need to poo you can just scootch them forward a bit more.
Good Luck.

I got one at Ikea for $4. It's similar to the Bjorn one that BRU sells, but probably not quite as comfortable.

babybeorn makes a tiny potty, you can get it at Milagros in NE portland. But he may prefer to be up on a seat like his parents....then there's one that you can buy at Babies r us that comes in a 3 part potty set (sorry, can't remember name). I use the top part, the seat part & put it on top of hte toilet & my son doesn't fallin & he's the same age as yours 7 pretty small. Have fun! Check out diaperfree baby portland for more info. They're a great resource!

I would try a stool and a potty seat that sits on your toilet, they are really supportive and he won't wobble, less mess too.

I like the baby bjorn one. The insert is easy to wash and has a built-in pee guard so no worry about getting pinched or having it fall off, etc.
