Potty Chairs Vs. Potty Seat

I was shocked when my 18 month old son became very interested in sitting on the toilet a couple weeks ago. I was even more shocked when he even started to go potty when I sat him on the toilet! He's also showing other signs of being ready to potty train (he goes longer with a dry diaper, he lets me know when he's peed/pooped, he sits on the toilet, he tries to take off his diaper). I've been looking at potty chairs, but I don't know if I should just get the potty seat that goes on a regular toilet, or if I should get a little potty chair. I'm trying not to get too excited, b/c I know he might be interested now, but then in a few weeks have no interest at all. I'm not going to push him, but I also don't want to discourage him! Which seat has worked well for your kids? And do the more expensive musical chairs make that big a difference? We're on a tight budget, so I don't want to spend extra money on a chair unless it's worth it. Thanks for the help!

So What Happened?

Thanks for the tips! I think I'll just go with the seat that goes in the big potty and see how it goes!

I also like the potty seat. When I was potty training my daughter I bought a little baggie for it and kept Lysol wipes to use on it in public. That way the little ones don't have to sit on those grody public toilets. Ick!

I loved the potty seat. It made all three of my kids feel very special that they could use the big boy or girl toilet. My son is five now and he still uses it to sit when needed. Its has a little of cushion and he does not feel like he will fall in the toilet. It is also one less thing to clean. The potty chairs you have to clean and santitize. And they stink if you don't get to them in time. The potty seats are easy to clean.

I got the seat that went on the big potty. I wanted him to get used to using the big people potty rather than using a little potty then have to train him on the big potty.
Worked pretty well. THey trained him at daycare on the big potty's (of course they are kid sized potty's). If I could only get him to poop in the potty I will have successfully trained one kid (with a lot of help from daycare) Only 1 more to go.
I don't think I've ever used the word "potty" so much in once conversation. :)

I used the potty seat that goes on a regular toilet. My thinking was my daughter needed to use the big one because when we're out in public that's what is available. Most places don't have little potty chairs or toilets at the small kid level. Little kids can get set in their ways so if they are only used to a small plastic potty on the floor, or one that plays music they may expect that same thing when out in public. Also, by using the big one it gets them used to the sound of the flushing.

Ok -- this is going to sound strange but my 14 month old has used the potty since she was about 4 months old. It started out as a cute little experiment and she took to it. Now at 14 months -- she mostly wears a pull up during the day and can usually stay dry all day if I routinely put her on the potty (diapers of course at night). I am only positive about the potty (NEVER negative at this age)...so don't be suprised if he takes to it faster than you think as long as you make it fun and positive.

Anyway, we have two different kinds of potty chairs. We have the baby bjorn 1 piece potty (very low to the ground and easy since just 1 piece) and the safety first comfy cushy potty (higher off the ground and converts to a seat attachment and a step stool). We have one upstairs and the other downstairs. I like both of them but in retrospect -- I wish I would have just gotten a seat. I agree with the rest that eventually you have to transition them to the big potty. SO might as well start there.
