Potty Question

We have just started potty training our 15 month old son. We've started it because he pulls at his diaper and seems very interested when, either I or my husband, goes to the bathroom. He did very well the first day and is still doing pretty good, you could say. My question is - How can I keep encouraging him to go potty?? How often should I put him on it?? I can catch him going #2, but its pretty hard to catch #1. Also a friend of mine suggested using rewards when does go, but I don't know how good of an idea that is. Then again this is my first time at potty training. I could use all the suggestion anyone is willing to give. Thank you all.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanx to everyone that has posted and those who may post later. Potty training is going great. He is catching on slowly, but surely. We don't push him at all. Just following him. We ask if he has to go and he either - a) shakes his head 'no', b) runs in the opposite direction ;p, or c) runs to the bathroom door. He even goes to the door on his own (sometimes). It is going alot better than I thought it would. And it can only get better!

hey A.! my advice would be to take a step back, and let your son take this at his own pace. youre not potty training him, you are training yourself to catch him! hes sooooo young, and when you try to push training on a baby that age, they usually regress, ending in both parties frustrated. youve done a wonderful thing by introducing him to the idea of the potty, now just sit back and watch, see how HE feels about it. he'll do it when hes ready, they all do :) good luck sweetie, and let us know how it turns out!! and remember, be patient :)

Great question...I have a 22 month old little boy and he seems pretty interested, too. I just thought he was too young. Maybe I will try starting him off as well. Thanks for posting and I'll be watching the responses for my own knowledge, too. I'm a first time mommy as well.

Mu daughter was about that age when she started. We used a calendar and put stickers on that day when she went potty. We had little stickers for pee and large stickers for poop. In the beginning see the stickers was enough as she got older and we put her in panties she got to pick out 1 dollar tree item for no accidents in a week.

I agree with Rachel, let him do his thing and act on his cues. Don't force anything because that will lead to much bigger problems (medical problems at that). He'll get it. Give him time and just be supportive. The best way children learn at this age is by example. Buy books and videos that help explain and show other kids using the potty. If you haven't bought a small potty for him yet, buy one. He's already on the right track.

Hello A.,
First I want to start off by saying your son is still young and if he falls back on potty training don't get discouraged. My son was 3 before he even wanted anything to do with the potty. With all 3 of my children we did a sticker chart in the bathroom. Everytime they went we put a sticker on that day and added more as needed. Then at the end of the week we would take a trip to the Dollar Store and I would let them get a toy. At that age any toy is a greatful gift. I never used the candy rewards due to them trying to pee/poop so much that all they ate was candy! Also, you can try going to the website www.peterpotty.com and check out their urinal for boys. I know it's kinda pricey for a potty but that is the best boy potty urinal I found. My son LOVED IT!!!! Well, I hoped this helped and Good Luck:-)
