Potty Trained 3 Year Old Back in Diapers!

Hi Moms! I had a previous request for my 3 year old because she was diagnosed with VUR. I got a great response but now have another problem related to her illness. After her last UTI my daughter started having some incontinence (wet her panties a little bit before she made it to the potty). She had a few tests done at the hospital that involved a catheter and since then has had no bladder control. She is almost 4 (next month) and we have had to put her back in diapers. I am not sure if it is trauma due to the catheter or just for attention or what? We are not scolding her because it could be related to the VUR. Any ideas or suggestions as to what is causing this? Thanks in advance for your responses.

When we were potty training I found a product like serenity type things, but made for toddlers and children. I found it online. It was sized for little ones and made to handle all that they do! They worked great. Undies still had to be changed, but it wasn't an unbearable mess and usually clothes were still dry. I'm sorry I don't remember the name. I think it was Pods. I found them on a potty training website, but I can't find them right now. I'm horrible on the web! If you can find them it might be easier than having to retrain later since she just leaks a little. I hope you find a good solution, especially to the health issues.

Hi K., my youngest daughter was dx with VUR at 3 months and is now almost 5 years old. her VUR is not active but as a result, she has chronic constipation issues which causes bladder control issues. We started seeing an awesome gastroenterologist here in Tucson and he ordered some abdominal x rays on a hunch that this was going on, based on her poor bladder control. When I lived in Phoenix, I did not know that the two go hand in hand and can trigger each other.

Basically, when she is constipated (we did not know she was constipated because she would still go but much of her stool was sticking to her colon) it puts pressure on her ureters and kidneys so she often does not feel the need to go until it is out, if that makes sense. It was VERy hard to potty train her and still has 1-5 accidents during the day and frequently at night but often, it is not by choice. If untreated, it can lead to more serious things such as kidney damage, nerve damage, etc. She now takes miralax to help with regulation.

With all this in mind, it may be worthwhile to get her x rayed for constipation and to see a gastroenterologist. Best of luck and feel free to email me with any questions. I had so many, when I found out her dx. H.

K., dont worry! I have a 5 1/2 year old girl who is still in pullups most nights. During the day she uses the potty, but she holds it in a lot and often doesn't quite make it and will have a little urine in her undies. it is NOT a problem at your daughters age. i have done a lot of research on this topic, as there is so much pressure to have a perfectly potty trained child by 3 years old now! actually, it is quite common for a child to do exactly what your daughter is doing. it is also not uncommon for this to go on until she is 6-8 years old. it could be that the catheter caused some trauma, but she should be able to recover from that. she will rebound from this, try not to worry. best, K. p

I have a friend whos daughter had some tests with a catheter and has had similiar problems (the week following the catheter she had accidents and still needs pull-ups at night). Her daughter just turned 4. Docs told her that anytime kids have UTI issues that incontinence can be an issue - sometime until they reach puberty. You might want to ask your doc for more info.

Hi K.,
I had responded once to your previous question about VUR.
My 5 year old just recently had surgery to correct Level III reflux. Today we had our post-op and and she is fixed!

I wanted to let you know that my daughter suffered incontinence with her UTI's after being potty trained for 3 years. Once the UTI's were cleared up the incontinence stopped. She is older than your daughter and more mature, so I would imagine that this has just been emtionally hard on your daughter and physically painful. My daughter suffered a sense of violation after the catheter test done back in October. My son, who just turned three and is not potty trained and has Level IV reflux. After his test with the catheter, he wimpered everytime he wet his diaper for nearly two weeks after the test. There was also blood present. He has no interest in potty training right now.

I am curious to know if your doctor has talked about the surgery with you. It is important to correct this with little girls by around age 5 if it hasn't corrected itself. The surgery and recovery are hard, but what relief we now have to have this behind us.

My advice is to just encourage your daughter daily and make her feel special. Once she starts to heal she will probably be using the potty again soon.

Keep me posted. I am very interested in how things turn out for you daughter. Our journey with VUR is so new and we have come so far in just 3 months. I hope to hear the same for you.

Hi K.. I am sorry to hear about your daughter's condition. VUR is something that I am not very familiar with; however, recently we have had to take our son into a specialist due to "leaking" before making it to the restroom. It began when he was 4. We tried everything to correct this problem-from punishments to rewards-but with no luck. Finally, a school nurse gave us a name of a pediatric urologist, because it started to be a problem at school, and neither the nurse nor us could figure it out. Anyway, this doctor was VERY knowledgable and helpful. I gaurentee she can help with any questions you may have. She was amazing. Her name is: Dr. Clare Close at Close Pediatric Urology. Her tele. # is ###-###-####. She has two locations (Henderson and the northwest side of town). I wish you and your daughter the best!

Hi, My sisters daughter has a similar problem to yours. Her daughter has had recurring UTI's since she was 2, she is now 10. After starting to see a Herbalist for the past six months she is now 2 months into no UTI's or accidents. She underwent many tests, as well as seen so many pediatric Urologists that my sister finally got fed up and went to a naturalist and this seems to be working good luck.

Well, as an adult myself I can tell you besides what she is going through those catheters do a number on us in more ways than one. Her tiny body has endured alot with that catheter but she is young and im sure her inside muscles will heal. I personally an not fond of some of the things these doctors do because of the after affects on us as humans.Have you tried the pullups with her. Im blessed to hear of your patience with her.YOu are a blessing i pray that all goes well with her. I find if you try and make a game of all that is going on with the children, that it all gets better. My prayers are with you. GBY and your family.

My daughter was also potty trained right at her third birthday and was doing great. Then she got a UTI and now she refuses to go poop in the toilet and will only go pee. She is terrified to go poop now. I have to put her in a pull up to go poop then after she's done she will got pee in the toilet. I to have wondered if she thinks it will hurt or what is going on. I'm have not been pushing the issue and just hoping she will finally want to do both. I'm at a loss myself.
