Potty Trained 3y.o. Still Wets Occasionally at Night

Hello everyone,
My 3y.o. son is fully potty trained and stays dry most nights. He wets maybe 1-2 nights a week. Should I keep him in pull-ups at night or will this discourage him from continuing to stay dry at night? Is it all a matter of his body maturing? Thanks so much for any thoughts about this!
S.

I would keep the pull ups on at night until you have constant dryness...or you will be changing sheets in the middle of the night and distubting sleep which is worse than wearing pull ups. 1 more year is not a bad thing when trying to train them. good luck.

Hi S.
My almost 4 year old boy was just potty trained this past summer, and he wet the bed at night about once a week for a couple months. I never went back to pull ups, and every night I would remind him of what I wanted him to do (like get up out of bed and go at night if you have to, go first thing in the morning, etc.). I guess it's just time and them maturing--he hasn't wet the bed in about a month or so.

I dont know if you can get away with it at your house or not, but I get my son up to pee before I go to bed at night and that way he stays dry til the am

Hi S.! I have 2 boys and I remember this point in potty training very well. I kept pull ups on them at night until I had at least 2 weeks of dry morning diapers. I would keep track of your evenings and compare what was different the mornings he wakes up wet. Maybe he's drinking too much before bed those nights. Also someone else mentioned taking him to the bathroom...I did that a few times as well, only I didn't want to make it a habit! But my little one will sometimes get up during the night to pee, not everynight, but occasionally.
He seems like he's doing well tho. Keep encouraging him and try the drink thing and taking him to the bathroom before you go to bed. See if it helps!

Hi S.,
Congratulations on toilet training your son already! Nightime wetting may have little to do with toilet training and more to do with bed wetting. Many children struggle with waking at night to use the bathroom (lots of reasons) and wet the bed even into adolescence. Try not to make a big deal out of it and keep him comfortable. Use pull-ups at night if you can or, if it bugs him, try Goodnights (although I think pricier). I struggled with this as a child until I was 11 years old (you could not wake me up at night--I even slept through an earthquake) and it is much more common than people used to think (and much more normal--nothing to do with toilet training). For his sake and yours I hope it is just a matter of wrapping up the toilet training, but in case it isn't, try to be patient and keep him comfy. Above all, never let him feel inferior because of it. :)

First of all, how do u potty train a boy! Mine is still young (will be 14 months next wk) but when do u start?
As for bed wetting, what happens when bed gets wet? Does he call u and do u take him to pee? There may be more. When is his bedtime? Does he alwayspee before bed? Even if he has a little sip of water before bed, always pee before sleep. If its only a few days/week, always tell him what a big boy he is and give him options. Go to bathroom at. Night w/out you (put in night light) or come to you then pee..good luvk!

I kept pull ups on my son until he was dry for a month or so at night. I did not want to upset him or hurt his self esteem by allowing him to wet his bed. It also saves alot of work and discomfort for the little one. Some kids sleep so soundly that they do not know they are urinating. It is a maturity thing and will come with time. My nephew is 7 and still wets to bed sometimes. Good Luck!

It may be maturation, but also keep an eye on what is different about the nights he does have accidents. His may be reacting to something in his food/environment causing him to pee in his sleep. Maybe he had Orange Juice with dinner, milk that evening, ketchup on his fries --many people have different triggers, so stay aware of what may be influencing his patterns.

Some kids also have a lot of trouble with enuresis when they are overly tired and fall into a deep sleep. When my daughter is in this situation, I'll put her on the potty about 3 hours after she goes to sleep and talk her through her potty trip, she pees, but never totally wakes up.
