So i finally have my son peeing in the potty, he still has accidents but not often, he even stays dry through the night if he doesnt drink anything after dinner. But i can NOT get him to poop in the potty! he turned 3 august 18th and i feel like hes old enough to be doing this... i know some kids take longer than others but does anyone have any advice?? hes the type of child you cant make do anything, if you try to make him he pitches a fit and then wont do it at all which makes it more difficult.

What can I do next?

You have to get him to want to go on the potty. Cloth training pants did it for one of mine. Another made the choice to go on the potty when we told her that Grandma and Grandpa only took potty trained kids to stay with them, she potty trained in one week and hasn't had an accident since.

I had a horrible time with my daughter. Two months into potty training she was still pooping in her underwear or holding it until she was constipated. I started giving her Miralax to force her to go and she got a prize for going on the potty. It all didn't work. Finally, my husband yelled at her threated to take her toys away if she kept pooping her her underwear. It worked hadn't had an accident in 3 weeks and she is so proud of herself now when she poops on the potty, I don't think we are going back. It was mean and it goes against everything people and professionals will say, but it worked for my daughter. For what it's worth I was against it, but it worked.

My son was urine trained in 1 day, 2 months after his 3rd birthday. It took another 7 months to get him to poop in the potty. I tried it all. I HATE this answer, but sometimes, it just takes time.

I have a very easy to bribe child. You know if you do or not. My son had no interest in potty training until we jokingly offered him a dollar to go....he accepted it and never looked back. Who knew! We had to stop this after he started soliciting other people for money when he used the toilet :)...also when he started tell his friends about the cash get got for going to the bathroom, as they of course thought he was fibbing. He is seven now and we all get a good laugh out of the ridiculousness of potty training. My 21 month old on the other hand potty trained herself on a little potty and refuses to wear a diaper. Go figure! Just an example of how one size never fits all w these little ones!

In my experience, Victoria T is right on. My older daughter (VERY independent, very stubborn, knows exactly what she will and will not do, thankyouverymuch) was totally pee trained in about 4 hours. No problems there. She resisted pooping on the potty though, and tried to hold it in, etc. Finally, I just waited until I knew she had to poop, and held her on the potty (I wouldn't let her do that arching her back to hold it in thing). I know, I know! So mean, so terrible, so not what the "experts" tell you to do... whatever, it worked. Once she realized that nothing bad would happen if she pooped in the potty, she was totally fine and went in the potty every time. No big deal. She just needed someone to make her get "over the hump" so to speak, and whatever fear she had of pooping somewhere other than a diaper just went away.

So, the method may be unconventional, but it worked. (She's turning 10 and doesn't appear to be scarred for life! ;)

We gave our kids treats for going potty. My SIL and Daughter give treats for going potty, but BIG treats for going poop.

To get my kids started going potty, the first kids watched daddy "making bubbles" and mom gave dad treats for "making bubbles". Then when the first was "making bubbles" and my second learned by watching him. Going poop was almost the same, except my wife put a solid poop from his diaper and put it in the toilet and let him see that poop belonged in the toilet too, not in the diaper.

Most kids are fearful of falling in. Get a small seat that will set on your toilet seat and let them learn on that. It will make it more comfortable. My wife read stories to my kids when she knew they had to go. When they got relaxed enough they went and then we made a big deal out of it and they got the special treat.

Good luck to you and yours.

Hopefully you have a small seat on top of the big seat. That helps. Comfort is huge. Try treats/rewards. Something he really loves. His favorite dessert, small toy, trip to get ice cream? Good luck.
