Hi I have been potty training my 2 1/2 year old son he's doin great for almost a month now. but i can't get him to use public restroom when we go out he wont even go in to one without screaming crying, so he ends up holding it til we get home and that can be any where from a hour to 4 or 5 hours later, i've tried to put a pullup or diaper on him but he wont pee in them anymore, he dont really use the diaper at night either most mornings he wakes up dry but he is racing me to the bathroom. Can anyone help me out i can't keep leting him hold it for that long? please i am willing to try anything. thank you
I'm not sure what scare's him but i can't even get him to walk into one without him flipping out on me as soon as he relizes where i am bring him its over. and sometimes i can't bring his potty seat with me like the other day we spent the day in the city, we took the ferry into the city so i didnt have my car i only had his stroller and his diaper bag witch im glad i had with me becuz we sat down to eat lunch and i asked him if he had to go pee and he said no so i sat him in the chair and the next thing i no he's in a puddle. my husband is ready to put him back in diapers but i dont want that cuz as one of you said he is pretty much potty trained i only have to work on breakin him from public restrooms and poopin on the potty he dont like to, but he dont like goin in them either. so i don't no what to do any more . but thank you and i will try talkin to him again about it.

Well I don't have much advice, but I also wanted to say that you'll be suprrised how long they hold it. I was always freaked out when we potty trained my daughter and she wouldn't go for hours! But, then I realized she really doesn't have to go. We would always try before we left the house and that helped.
As far as the public restroom, that's tricky. Do you know what exactly freaks him out? I've heard that the automatic toilets get a lot of kids. I've heard of moms putting a pad of post-its in their bag and putting it over the sensor until your child is done. Also, maybe you could just start by trying to locate the bathroom in each store you frequent, not go in, just point it out and say oh there it is and move on. Maybe slowly graduate to going in, washing ends, going to the potty. I don't know if that would work, but maybe worth a try?
Congrats, though, b/c it sounds like he's pretty much pottry trained and that's an awesome feeling!
I always took the exact same small potty seat we had at home ( I had 2) and left it in the car. I would use double lined grocery bags and put them in. That way, when my daughter needed to go it was her familiar potty, and it was easy clean up for me. Good luck, I know how trying potty training can be.
I am amazed at how long my almost 3 year old can hold. I have heard about the problem in using public restrooms from friends, but my daughter never had it. I also got those cute Elmo themed toilet seat covers from Babiesrus as they stick to the seat and don't move here and there and that excited her to use public restrooms. Unfortunately they are not flushable. Now I use it sometimes when there are no seat covers available or if toilet is really dirty but I always have them handy. You can give it a try if you want.
