Potty Training 2 Year Old

My daughter just turned two and has been going potty on the potty for a few months. The problem is she only poops on the potty not pee. I don't know if anyone has had this happen but I'm not sure what to make of it. She has been using pull-ups for a while but I don't think she is wet enough to realize that she needs to use the potty. If she doesn't have anything on and has an accident she freaks out when she pees (she has never had an accident with poop since she started using the potty) Any suggestiosn would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
My daughter is potty trained since she was about 19months old.
When you said that she freaks out when she pees on her self that is a good sign!
Just forget about the pool ups, and go big girl underwear!Get her special "underwears"!And just be patient for couple of days! do it when you are stress free and nothing is going on!Good Luck, your daughter will be fine!

When she's at home, she must always have her underwear on. With me, when I was at homd, I always had my underwear on, even if I seriously peed in my underwear and cried bitterly and couldn't take off my underwear. Then, I tried to open the front of my underwear, which I less seriously peed in my underwear and cried less bitterly. I am of autism and profound mental retardation. The same, must go for her. She must always have her underwear on at home, even if she seriously pees in her underwear and cry bitterly and can't take off her underwear. She must then, try to pull the bottom and back off her underwear to one side, that she'll less seriously pee in her underwear and cry less bitterly.

try switching to the padded underpants, Target now carries them. i'm personally not a fan of the pull-ups.

Hi S.,
Pullups aren't really training pants, they're a diaper that pulls up and down. You are right that it doesn't show her the consequences of peeing herself, she doesn't feel really wet. A switch to cloth diapering can help, she'll see what happens when she pees - she feels really wet, and start to recognize what it feels like just before that happens. Also, don't ask whether she wants to or has to use the toilet, just take her. When I trained my youngest, I used the triple layer cloth training pants with waterproof outer layer and took him to the bathroom every hour and a half. It took 2-3 weeks, but he learned to wait to pee til I took him to the toilet rather than having to sit in wet training pants.
Good luck

Hi S., I let my daughter be without underwear at home and put her potty in the middle of the room and always remind her to sit down and try to do her business.. if she refuses, it's ok.. but when she asks me for some toy or game I tell her : "ok I'll give you , but please first sit on the potty and then we will play". You should help her to learn how to control herself by making it regular, every 40 mins or so,depending on how much she drinks. Then she will get used to it and once you will notice how she will go on her potty without you telling her. They like to control things at this age and beeing without underwear make it easier (at least for my daughter it was difficult to take off her panties alone, so she would need to ask for my help, but usually she likes to do things on her own ;)) Good luck

Hey S.,

It is probably a good thing that its the poop she does with ease because usually that is the most difficult part of potty training. I would throw out the pull ups and go straight to big girl underwear. Pull ups feel just like a diaper so peeing in them is not going to bother her. However if she freaks out when she has an accident naked then she will surely not like wet underwear. I am sure if you put on the regular underwear(or cloth training underwear) she will completely potty train. After all your half way there. Good luck!!!!

I totally agree with Agatha! The pull ups are just too much like diapers, just let her get freaked out about it! My son did the pooping first too and I guess it usually happens the other way around so that is great for you!

My daughter had trouble w/ pull-ups also. Her problem though was that she also did not feel her urine in the pull-up and had accidents but the problem was, since she didn't feel it and i did not know she had gone, she started getting diaper rash, which she never got normally in a diaper. but because the pull-ups do not absorb the fluid, so the child knows they peed the moisture was so close to her skin, but like your daughter not enough to let her know she went just enough, to irritate her skin. ANYWAY, what worked for us was putting underpants on first and then a pull-up over it. so she was a big girl in her underpants, but we told her we put the pull-up on 'just in case' it worked because w/ the underpants she would know instantly if a little urine would come out and she would call me for the potty. but if she did not feel it before too much came out, that was okay and she was not embarrassed cuz the pull up caught it. worked great for going to stores and things too, so she didn't feel like she had an accident in the car or store. sorry so long winded but hope the idea helps.

You might want to get a few cloth diapers. She will quickly associate the wetness with urine since she'll feel it. We used cloth and had no problems with toilet training. My Mom used cloth and I was out of diapers at 18 months, my daughter at about 2.
