Potty Training - York,PA

I am hoping someone can help me or give me advice. I have a 30 month old daughter and we are in the process of potty training. I work full time so she is in daycare for about 9 hours a day! They take her to the bathroom every hour and there was a period of time where she would be dry all day but now it seems that the wet diapers are becoming more frequent. She tends to wake up dry about 90% of the time and will pee in the potty. At home we take her to the potty quite often or when she asks but she will still be wet. Some people told me to just put panties on her and let her wet them and she will hate it and be potty trained within a couple days! I was going to try that this weekend but that only gives me 2 days to complete this. I would not feel right taking her to daycare in panties and having her wet herself (or worse) while in their care. I know all kids have accidents and the daycare is prepared for that. I let her pick out a couple packs of panties so she would get excited about wearing them but I am not sure if that is the way to go.

What can I do next?

I would do the panties at home on weekends. I read somewhere that this works for parents who work full time. It may take several weekends and weeks rather than having time to work on it every day, but it will get done in due time. She is at a great age to learn, and is having a good start. My daughter quit wanting to wet in her diaper once it clicked-I still put her in one for hectic days, long trips, errands, etc but she would wait to pee until she got somewhere, but the road was long first with the panties and diapers. Hang in there, and keep being patient!

You should talk to your daycare providers and tell them your plan. Bring lots of extra clothes and maybe some plastic bags to store the wet clothes..make sure they have everything they need. I agree that you should get rid of the diapers for good or it will take much longer. My son was fully potty trained in two weeks w/ no accidents during naps or nighttime. You can do it but you have to be committed to it and get through those first few days of constant changing and washing. I wish you all the best!

You have to be consistant. I see more people with this problem constantly, We have become to above being able to clean up a mess when we are so used to using disposable diapers. Put her in underwear everyday not just on the weekends. Sure she'll have some accidents. Pack extra clothes for daycare and for in your car. People may not like this in comparison but what would you do if this was your puppy? Would you just let it go all over the house? Of course not. YOu must be consistent with them as well. She'll get the message. It may not be in just one weekend or one week. It may take months. This is the hard part. But if you stick with it you and she will eventually succeed.
My other recommendation that I have found has helped me tremendously is going and getting another potty to put in the car/van. For when there is absolutely no where to stop you can have her go on it.

Ask her teachers how they feel about that approach. I'm a preschool teacher, but I'm in an older classroom so potty training is not something I deal with. I have, however, spoken to my sons teachers about putting him in underwear and just providing lots of changes of clothes and they were very receptive to the idea. The "cold turkey" approach is something that several other parents do and they're willing to work with however the parents choose to potty train their kids. It can't hurt to see how they feel about it.

I went through a similar situation with my son. We went cold turkey with just underwear. I think your daughter will pick up very quickly and will not want wet underwear. We still do diapers at night. Good Luck!

Usually at your daughter's stage, the underwear will work! My daycare actually asked me to put my son in underwear and send him. He had extra clothes there, and they asked me to bring in extra underwear and it worked! He had one accident at home. ONE! And that was that. Good luck to you!

It is my experience that going 'cold turkey' is the only way. Otherwise it confuses the child. I would simply praise her and tell her that you know she can do it and then just do it. (Even if she has an accident speak positively) If she is ready I think she will be well on her way after 2 days.

You might want to use a diaper at bedtime but when she wakes up make it a priority to get her to the potty and back in underwear. You'll probably find her dry in the mornings but I see it as added insurance.

Good luck!

I toilet trained in 1 day after reading the book, "toilet training in less then a day" it does work! Don't confuse her by putting diapers on and asking her to use the toilet. Turn off all distractions, Devote the day to potty training. Lots of drinks and salty snacks. take her every hour or two. Verbalize what is going on the whole day. Example, " walk to the potty" pull down your pants, sit on the potty, I would always do shhh, listen...when they would pee we'd have a party! Clapping and carrying on, we'd tell anyone around who would listen. They get excited to do it again because of all the praise. When they "poop" some children are frightened by this initially on the potty, I would just hug them until they got through it, then of course we'd have a party because of it. Be sure to acknowledge you understand they are afraid and then afterwards talk about it, and talk about how brave they were, and that they did it and they can always do it. Don't have tv on, or other distractions do quiet things like candy land etc. focus on the child and toilet training. The weekend is more then enough time, just don't put diapers back on ! Enjoy your day.

I used the 3-day method w/ our son who is almost three. You will probably have to take Friday or Monday off of work but it is so worth it. We started 2 weeks ago and he is doing great. Yes, he does occasionally have an accident but that's to be expected. Also, pooping in the potty is a different story. The best advice I can give you is to get them eating more fiber so the poopy accidents are that bad. Good Luck!!
