My experience, and I have 2 boys ages 9 and 20, was around 2-1/2. I have an older daughter & it was a struggle to potty train her. I started before she was 2 because I was pregnant with her brother & didn't want 2 in diapers. She took longer and it was not fun, we met our goal but at what expense?
When my 20yo son was 2-1/2 he still wasn't talking past 'mama' 'dada' 'hi' and so I didn't think I could train him if he wasn't talking. But at 2-1/2 he started ripping off his diaper & went potty all my himself & within 3 days was done. I was shocked to say the least, but it taught me something. That waiting wasn't the worst thing and despite what everyone told me, he matured just fine. IMHO the worst thing would've been to yell, plead, bargain, cry, and stress out over potty training like I did with the daughter. So after that I didn't even truly start training my kids till they were 2 and it was great (I had 3 more after him).
So just watch him, see if he's interested in it at all. If so, let him explore it, but if not, don't push it, you have time.
