I need some suggestions on potty training. I have been working with my son, who will be 3 next month. He has no problems (most of the time) pooping on the potty and will pee in the potty when I take him and have him sit, but the problem is that when he has to pee, he is running and trying to make it to the bathroom but does not have control of his bladder. He is really trying, even saying he is trying to hold his pee but just can't. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Try to watch him closely and see if he's doing anything to alert you just before he starts running to the bathroom. My sons still keep playing until it is an emergency, so I have trained myself to notice if they start squeezing their legs together. They both do it and try to wait so they won't have to drop what they're doing to go to the potty. My younger son still has accidents occasionally because of this, but my older one always makes it, he just ends up running if I don't notice his body language fast enough. I think they all have to be reminded to go for a while after potty training, longer depending on the kid.

Potty training can be soooo difficult for us AND our children, huh? I am no expert, but this worked for my daughter. When we potty trained, I had a bright red bag labeled "_____'s Potty Prizes". I filled it with little trinkets and fruit snacks and stickers from the dollar store. Anytime that my daughter went to the potty, she got a prize. I put the bag on a shelf in the bathroom where she could not reach it, but could always see it as a reminder.
As for trying to make it to the potty on time, I just followed this rule.... The moment my daughter would wake up in the morning, I would take her straight to the potty. After each meal or drink, I would wait about 15 minutes and then take her to the potty. If she whined about not being able to potty, I would encourage her to try her best, and remind her of the prize bag. This kind of conditioned her to potty periodically througout the day. I always made sure she would potty before we left anywhere, and before bed.
Hope this helps!!!

My daughter will drop everything and run to the bathroom while pulling her pants down when she has to go. It could be that he gets busy with what he is doing, playing, eating, watching tv and doesn't realize till he has to go. You could try to sit him on the potty every 30 minutes or direct him to the bathroom every 30 minutes. He should start getting the idea or "feeling" when he barely has to go. Potty training was not fun in our house. My 5 year old is trained, but we still have a few issues. Good luck.

When my daughter was little and my son their Dr told their dad and I to take them every two hours even if they don't go it will help train them to know sooner when they need to go. Hope this helps all my best to you. Mom of two teenagers.
