Potty Training - Fort Stewart,GA

We are starting potty training in our 2 1/2 year old. When he wears diapers he usually does not tell us he is wet, but when in underwear, he is very aware of it and will rush to the toilet. Because of this, we have decided to use underwear and no pullups. He wears a diaper at night and insists on wearing his underwear over them :) He goes more often then not in his potty chair, and when he has an accident, he will often pee a little, stop himself, run to the potty and finish.

I have a few questions for those who have already gone through this.
1. How do you clean an accident on the carpet? Should i have him help me (not in a negative punishment way)
2. How do you clean the potty chair after peeing? soap and water every time, swish with water like a flushed toilet, clorox wipe etc?
3. Poop . . . while he is doing really well with peeing in the potty, he has not pooped in it yet. Any ideas?
4. Long trips out . . . we live in an area where we are far from most things other than a walmart. we often go an hour in the car for day trips. would you just bring lots of changes of clothes or put a diaper just in case? What do you do if an accident occurs while somewhile like a shopping cart?
5. How can i encourage him to use a regular toilet? He is afraid to sit on one because he thinks he will fall in the big seat. At home we could use a little toilet seat, but that won't help in public.
6. Any general tips?

Thanks!

1. If you had pullups on his you would have no accidents to clean up. Their purpose is to protect your furniture and flooring from this. They work like underwear because they are easier to push down and pull up.

No, he's 2...not 10. He should not have to clean up anything, he's learning so it's not his fault he pees on your floor, it's your fault for not taking him in time. When it comes right down to it the choices YOU make are what makes the accidents, he's still working on walking and talking at the same time, peeing in a potty and learning what that feeling is, if he even has it yet, is a lot to add to that.

2. Dump and rinse. Seriously, do you clean your toilet after each use? No, you flush it. Occasionally you clean it. Same with a potty seat.

3. Give him 1 jelly bean for pee and 2 jelly beans for poop. Or M&M's, what every small candy he loves. It has to be a treat though. Not something he ever gets any other way.

4. Use pull ups. No issues. Take him to the bathroom as soon as you get there and then while you're there if it's more than an hour.

5. Always have him sit backwards on the big toilet. It prepares him for standing and facing the same way, he can't fall in this way because his legs are totally supporting him. No worried or issues.

6. He's young for this so be patient. Make it fun, it goes much better.

1. Yes, have him help clean up. He can help blot with a towel before you use whatever more thorough cleaning method you use.
2. I swished with water each time, and cleaned more thoroughly at the end of teach day.
3. Poop - does he have any kind of schedule, or is there any way you can predict when he's going to do it, and then run him to the potty at that time? With my kids, if I had them sit long enough, it eventually just happened.
4. I used pull-ups when going out.
5. We bought a portable little potty seat. It folds up very small, and it fit in the diaper bag. We bought it at Toys R Us, but I think they are widely available. Try it out a few times at home on the big potty so he can see how it works before you go out.
6. Sounds like he's doing great!

1. Resolve will work great. I've never had my boys clean up after an accident. It's a completely normal part of the learning process, so I didn't feel like that should be their responsibility.

2. I just used a little water to rinse it out and flushed it down the toilet. I laugh a little when people talk about washing it thoroughly every time. Do you clean your regular toilet every time someone pees? We have well water, so we don't even flush every time someone pees (very, very common for those on well water). I did clean it thoroughly every time the pooped.

3. Some kids really do take longer to feel comfortable pooping on the potty.

4. My boys actually did really well when we went out. We would all go to the potty before we left. We would all go to the potty when we arrived. I think the fact that all of us were going potty made it less of a big deal. They didn't feel singled out.

5. Lots of people use Wee12adopt's suggestion. I actually brought the potty chair with me in the van. Just give him time. Does he sit down to pee or pee while standing? If he pees while standing, he will probably be fine in no time.

Sounds like he's doing great. Just keep being supportive.

I can help with #5 ... They sell portable potty seats that fit over the big toilet and fold up so you can carry it in the diaper bag or your purse. The one I got even came with a Ziploc type bag to carry it around in.

This is the one I bought ... I liked that it had handles.

We used both a clorox wipe and then soap & water to clean the potty seat each time...For longer trips, try the diaper/pullup w/his undies on over it...if that's an issue, then just take pack several changes and plastic bags. As far as #5 goes, we used to have a a portable thing that you could put on the toilet seat and would fold up when you were done....And the poop, give him time...it'll come...one thing at a time...
General tips: overnight may take longer (esp. w/ boys)...they sell overnight pull ups that he could do himself should he still need something after diapers...but they are kind of pricey...my son used them for awhile and then only when he was sick until he was about 6or 7...Good luck
I have no idea about carpetting...we hardwood....

Resolve works wells along with some good ole elbow grease to scrub it out, or if you own a rug scrubber that works too. To clean the potty chair I would just rinse it out with water and once a week clean it with bleach. Boys tend to take a while to poop on the potty, but if he is one that will go and hide when it does it or asks for a diaper just have him sit on the potty. When going on those hour car rides you can either put him in a diaper or make sure he goes potty right before you leave and has nothing more to eat or drink. Once you get to your location take him to the bathroom before doing anything else. For the last one, the best way to get boys to pee on the big potty and not have the accidental spray everywhere, is to face them backwards. This helps prevent the accidental spray and gets rid of the fear of falling into the toilet since they are more stable.
