Potty Training Advice - Defuniak Springs,FL

My daughter is 20 months old. She is getting interested in the potty. Whenever my husband or I have to use the "facility" she wants to go, she takes her diaper off herself and sits on the potty. THAT IS GREAT! Here is where the problem comes in...SHE DOES NOTHING. When she stands up after sitting there for a while, she tinkles on the floor. I try to explain to her that what she did was tinkle, which is good, but it would be even better to do that inside the potty. I do not speak to her in a mean voice, as I know that she is just little, but in my head I'm going crazy. How can I get her to understand that better (I know she's just being a turkey to do it), or is she just going to have to grow out of that? Any advice would be great!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I had a talk with my husband, and asked him to please try sitting down to urinate when she is in the room. Over this past weekend, we had some success. Saturday, 11/11, after sitting on her potty for many minutes, she decided that she wanted to sit on "Mommy's" potty, so I held her up there while she sat. She saw a clock on the counter that I forgot to put away, and was wanting it. I used it as a reward! I told her that if she went "pee-pee" in the potty, she could play with it (it is a Disney clock, and plays Disney music)...she got a serious look on her face, then some urine came out!!! She stopped, looked at me, I reassured her that she was doing exactly the right thing, asked her to please let the rest of the "pee-pee" out into the potty, and she did! She got to play with the clock for a while. Sunday, 11/12, similar situation, except she wanted to watch a DVD that she loves. I again told her that she had to "pee-pee" in the potty before she could watch it. SHE DID! I was so proud of her. Now I know...I have to bribe her. No, I know, she has to have a reward to get her going...soon, there will be no stopping her.

Thank you everyone for your WONDERFUL advice. Please be sure to continue giving me more tips...I know I'll need them.

May God Bless you all!!!

Hi,
I would let her know that it is not acceptable to pee on the floor, only because if she does not know definitely that that is not acceptable behavior than she will continue to do it. They learn the correct behavior when we clealy state what is the correct way to do it. I mean, I would not be mean, but lovingly firm.

D.,

This EXACT thing happened with my daughter at about that age. I was fairly pregnant at the time and determined to not have 2 in diapers! I tried and tried and tried to sit her on the potty for 15 minutes and nothing. Then pee on the floor or whatever she was wearing. I actually gave up for a while. Jump to about 7 months later, my baby was about a month old, the older one 27 months. Her grandmother keeps her a couple days a week and just started putting panties on her all day. YES-she went on the floor, there was cleaning up to do, but she knew she was wet. Within 2 days she was asking to and going in the potty!! I personally thought it was a miracle, but it turns out she just didn't like the wet feeling and wasn't getting it with the diapers and pull-ups so it didn't matter while she was wearing them.

Try it...it might just work. :)Good luck!

PS. I also posted a response to another mama who's child had been doing well and then started wetting the bed. You might check that out too.

The thing that helped my boys was foodcoloring. I would put it in the toliet after they flushed so the next time it would be there. They both loved the fact that it changed color when they pee peed. Even being that young my 2 yr old understood.Hope it helps!

I always pu my daughters favorite candy on the sink and if she went potty where she was supposed to, I gave her some of her candy. It worked really great for me. W. P

I would try three things - one a children's DVD that talks about potty training they have some really cute and funny ones out there, second, get a book to read to her about potty training and finally get her a potty training doll. Have her teach the doll to go on the potty and the dolls they have now do actually go (you add water). Good luck

When she pees on the floor, have her help you clean it up with toilet paper so you can put it in the toilet and say "lets put your pee pee in the potty!"

Then I would try first thing in the morning, when she is likely to need to go. Get a toy or book to distract her and encourage her to sit a bit longer.

That's great you're staying neutral to her not going in the potty. And really awesome that you are following her cues for readiness. Make sure you show her how excited you are when she does go in the potty.

Does she see Daddy pee standing up? Could she be trying to do that?
Another thought... run the water while she's sitting down. Even for adults, running water often encourages that process!
I have a little one that's 25mo, she will most often go when I walk away- like she has performance anxiety or something. If you can get her to stay seated while you turn your back, walk away or something, maybe she'll go? If I'm staring at her, she immediately gets up and says she's done.
Good luck!
