I need some advice on potty training. My daughter is almost 18 months old and she seems to be showing signs of ready to use the potty. The wonderful ladies at daycare in her class even told me that she is showing signs there. They usually don't start help with training kids until they are in the next classroom but they are willing to work with her. I don't want to push her at all but if she is ready then so am I. My friends with daughters didn't get their girls trained until they were 3 so I don't really know how to go about training her this young. I was originally wanting to do the 3-day method but now am wondering if she is too young for that? Any advice is appreciated!

What can I do next?

My son wasn't trained untill after his second birthday, but I know it was a long time ago and things change. Me and my sister are 16 months apart, ( I'm 28, and she's almost 30)and my mom had her trained before I was born!!!!! I think it's crazy but she did, and then I believe that I was trained at 18 months. It's crazy how much things over the years...but I say that if she's showing signs, then go for it!!

my daughter was 18 months old when she started to train herself. I had bought a potty for her and put it in her bedroom. I didn't talk to her about it because I didn't figue she was ready, however, she must have seen one at daycare becuase I started to find liquid in it.. I caught her going on it one day... by the time she was 3, we were only wearing diapers at night... go for it...

I would say go for it. I am one that is all for training early. My daughter is 3 years old now, but she was potty trained since she was like 15 or 16 months old. She wouldnt keep a diaper on. We put the potty chair in the living room so she didnt feel like she had to be away from everyone when doing her business. She caught on immediately, in fact she was going potty every oh 30 minutes to an hour because we rewarded her with money, sounds crazy but she loved it. She would potty in a diaper or pullup just to get them off, she wanted big girl panties on. After 2 weeks she was in panties everywhere, even hour long car rides. I never forced her to sit ont he potty just suggested, if she said no then I wouldnt make her. She even potty trained herself at night. I havent had to buy pull ups for her for over a year now. I have 1 and 2 year old sons, and the 2 year old is really showing interst and has been, I don't push it. Just yesterday after being all dressed he started undressing I got irritated cause I was in a hurry, but he finally held it long enough to make it on the potty. Hes tried telling me before but just never made it in time. And he will not sit on a potty chair he wants the actual toilet. So now that he has done it on his own I will start working with him but wont push it. But I will be so happy when they are all out of diapers! Goodluck!

I don't think that there is any harm in introducing it to her-but I wouldn't push it. My friend's daughters who are almost 19 months old said uh oh and then went potty in the bath tub so she has just started sitting them on it in the morning and before the bath just to get them used to it and to let them know what it is for. They are not actively training them yet. They said that they will start that when they get a little older and when they start showing more signs that they are ready. Hope this helps!

The one thing to make sure of before potty training (at whatever age)is that the child can take off his or her pants and diapers, pull ups, whatever is worn and put them back on again. In my experience, potty training drives everyone crazy unless this skill is there. If she can do that, go for it! (I don't know about any "methods". One of my children (at age 3)told me one day no more diapers and that was that. One was lazy and wanted to play more than take time to go potty. I had to send the older one to preschool and then tell the other one that he couldn't go with his brother until he was potty trained for at least a month (also age 3). That was that, also.

Hi L.!
I have an in home childcare and have trained many a children! If your daughter is 18 mos. and going on the potty that is terrific! Especially if she is the one initiating it. My advice is to use big girl pants now and find out if being wet bothers her at all right now. If it does, she's probably ready to be potty trained. I have had several children potty trained before they turn 2 yrs old, including my own son (who is now 5). Just keep in mind that all kids are different and are ready at different ages. Also, since she is so young; be prepared for relaspes. My daughter was about 20 months when she started going on the potty. Then one day decided she had enough of that and reverted back to going in her pants. She is now 27 months and going on the potty again. Patience is the key. Don't make it a frustrating experience for either of you. Give it a shot for a few weeks and if it doesn't seem to be "clicking" with her, just go back to diapers and try again in a couple of months. Good luck!

I would say dont push it, let her go at her own pace, if she is taking her diaper off and wanting to sit on the potty that is great.

My son does it as well he is 26mths old and takes his diaper off and goes on the potty, then he wants to run around naked. I dont push it at this point, I just let him go at his pace. When he is 2 1/2, I will start really potty training.

Good Luck
