Potty Training - Baby Alive Doll? Movies?

My eldest son was autistic. He potty trained many years ago, but thought I'd mention what we did... he was good to go by 2 1/2. I first started using the potty at home and left the door open with his potty seat nearby so he could get used to the idea. Then I had him sit on it when he woke up and before bath like any other routine. I never pushed (autistics hate that and regress), let him basically train himself. I also bought a Barbie brand Kelly doll that had a potty/ sink set. He loved it. I had a lot of teasing, but hey, I could care less! In fact, I am in the middle of kid #4 training, and let her go at her pace as well. So far, so good!

My daughter has a Baby Alive doll. These dolls are awesome. Yes, you can give them water-in fact you are suppose to after feeding them their food and juice. We use infant newborn diapers for the doll, they are cheaper than the actual doll diapers.I run an in home daycare and two of the boys I care for have high functioning autism and they are facinated with the doll. Bear in the big blue house use to make a potty video, but I do not know if it is available any more. A quick phone call to toys-r-us would or babys-r-us would answer this question.

Once upon a potty is really good and really explains the whole potty thing, as far as how your body works (a hole for making wee wee and a hole for going poop) they have a girl one and a boy one. You can also get the little girl or boy doll (just rag dolls) that come with their own potty like what is in the show. You can get it in DVD or book or both. Target has a package deal with a potty,doll and book. My kid really liked it esspecially the potty song.

Its kind of funny that you ask about the baby alive doll. I was just at my best friends house yesterday, and she did a gift exchange with her preschool and her daughter recieved a Baby alive doll. The doll she recieved came with a diaper on the baby, and one extra, and 2 packs of the juice for the baby to drink. It was a big mess, diapers didn't hold because the leaked on my friends leg. She used the orange drink mix and it did come out orange, so the kids could see that it came in orange and came out orange as well. But water would work, not sure if teaching a child that what goes in must come out, with water works, cause they can't see it, but I am not an expert. What makes sence to us adults, doesn't to little ones.
My grandmother found Potty Training books, that have sound with them. "It's Potty Time for Boys" Potty Training made easy, Chris Sharp, Gary Currant - Hardcover - They also have one for Girls.

My daughter enjoyed both the Elmo's Potty Time show and the Bear in the Big Blue House Potty Time with Bear. Between the two, I would recommend the Bear because it's got good music. They don't really teach the specifics the way the doll might- it's more about being comfortable with the potty.
We don't have the Baby Alive (I was worried about the mess I kept hearing about)- but you could just put food coloring in water rather than buying the doll juice. And another poster's idea of real newborn diapers is great- you could get a cloth fitted diaper in newborn size. (I don't know whether the color would wash out easily or not, though).

I have a 4.5 year old son with ASD. I went to a training that included ideas for potty training and they talked about a book with pictures of the child. I can see if they'll send me the file, I didn't use it, before I could pull the training material together, he started potty training. It was a very LONG process and we are mostly there 6 months later. I can see if I can get my hands on the file or scan the papers they gave us to see if you can pull together the same kind of book for your son. We bought Elmo Potty Time.. It is the first and only movie that has kept my daughters attention. She loves it! She sits on her potty and goes like Elmo! It is only about 8 dollars and is worth a try. Good Luck!
