Just wondering what a majority of moms' prefer when it comes to potty training their children. I bought a potty seat cover for the toilet but I am wondering (because I will have to pick her up and put her on the toilet for awhile) if a regular potty is better. My daughter was two in March and she is showing signs that she is ready to use the potty. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hi A.!

Congrats on the new milestone! My soon to be 4 yr old also started potty training at 2. She refused to use the potty chair because she thought it looked like a toy and wanted to use the 'big people potty". The minute I got her the potty seat and princess underwear, she was fully potty trained in about 2-1/2 weeks.

Potty seat to go over the regular toilet (less messy clean-up, GROSS) and a step stool!

I trained both my kids (a girl and a boy) to the regular toilet and didn't use a potty at all, but I waited til around their third birthdays and we had a single step stool to help them climb up. Good luck.

We bought a potty seat for my son. He never used it. I threw it away last week. He used his potty chair and now at 3 years 4 months uses the big potty all the time.

We have both (a bjorn chair and a safety 1st seat) and DD overall prefers the potty chair vs the seat insert and we can take the chair with us camping and such.

Both my kids just used a potty seat with step stool. Like the first poster, I didn't like the thought of having to clean out a small potty when everything could just be flushed away.

My older daughter loved sitting on the "big" potty, where my younger one decided she was scared of it, and insisted on a little potty chair. Every kid is different, and you may have to start with a potty chair and move up to a potty seat... you never really know with kids that age! Is it possible to take her with you to Babies R Us or wherever and let her choose between the two? If she has no opinion, then I'd go with the potty seat that goes on the big toilet.

My daughter was really resistant to potty training so it was a struggle just to get her to sit on any potty - we started with the little potty chair because that was less scary than the big potty. Eventually once she was trained pretty well on the little potty, she was more willing to use the big potty. The first few times it was when we were out in public and she had no choice but to use the big potty. Then using the big potty at home was no big deal.

I only used a seat cover when training both my kids. I just bought a step stool so they could reach it easier.

My daughter wanted no part of a potty chair. She played in it more then anything. She would stack her toys in there. We started using the big potty. She has a potty seat and a step stool. When we are out she needs help getting on and has no problem with that. We had some problems in the beginning. She would start and then stop. We did not push the issue and when she was ready we did it again and again. She is now 3 and doing a great job. Make sure to praise her when she does go. The first time that my daughter peed in the potty she got this look on her face like she did something wrong and was going to get into trouble. I just started yelling YAY!!! and clapping. Then she was ok with it. You have to follow her cues and see what she is more comfortable with. Best of Luck!!!

I use both. Our playroom is downstairs and doesn't have a bathroom, so I keep the potty down there for my newly trained dd to use. When she's upstairs she uses the potty seat on the toilet. When she first started, she seemed to prefer the small potty. My MIL just told me that Ace Hardward sells a regular toilet seat that has a smaller seat that can go up and down for kids... I thought that was a great idea! Good luck!

I used a potty chair with both my kids. A boy and girl.
The Baby Bjorn potty chair.
They liked it.
It is useful and very handy, because it is portable and very easy to clean.
And they can sit on it, themselves.

Then as they progressed, in time, then they transitioned to a regular toilet.
By that time, they were ready for that.
