My son is now 18-months-old and I am starting to think about potty training - that is, I realize that I don't really know anything about it! Can you recommend any tried-and-true books on the topic? Also, I'd like to buy a potty seat to put in the bathroom now - are there any seats that are better than others?

I don't know much about books on the subject, but we've tried a couple of different seats. We like the seat that fits on top of the bigger toilet seat. It makes my son feel like an even bigger boy to sit on the same pot as mom and dad. He can't get on and off it by himself, which is a little drawback, so you'll have to decide if you like that or not.

The other chair we had was a wooden potty chair that my in-laws got at a craft show. Very cute, with a magazine rack on one side and his own toilet paper roll holder on the other, but not at all practical. The seat area is too narrow for a boy to have the pee shield in between his legs so we never used it. Other versions of chairs would probably be easier to work with and more practical, but that's part of the reason why we liked the seat insert on the big toilet.

Hope that helps!

I just started using the book It's Potty Time (for girls) with my 16 month old and she loves that it has a button to push to flush the toilet. It's been a hit for us. I would also recommend the seat that goes on top of the toilet vs. a potty chair, from what I've heard, the chairs can seem more like a toy. But I'm sure they work too.

I love the baby bjorn little potty. It is one piece - easy to clean. With my daughter we went from diapers to underwear cold turkey. She wet herself every time for 4 days but by week 2 she was having accident free days and nights. She still has an accident once in a while but I've heard that is normal. I've read that they aren't considered fully potty trained until they've been accident free for 6 months. Good Luck.

My 2.5 year old daughter is potty training now and we have a potty chair (plastic, from Target) that can be used either alone or the top comes off to go on the big toilet (and the bottom becomes a step stool) if you want. I currently have it in the family room so she doesn't have to go far if she needs to go and it's working out great. I thought I would hate cleaning it out but after changing zillions of diapers it's not bad at all. She will sit on the big potty too if we hold her and seems to like to have the option to use the little one or the big one. I think once she gets it down a little better, I'll probably put the top of the seat on the big potty so she can just use that, but right now she seems to really like the little one. Oh, and it was basically a toy to her for a long, long time, which was fine with me. When she was finally ready to really start using it regularly, she was very comfortable sitting on it.
The story she really likes is "Once Upon a Potty." We even rented the video version from the library and she thought that was pretty cool.
Good luck--and be patient. I think it's only like 4% of kids that are trained by 2 years old and only 60% by 3.
