Hi - I have a 3 1/2 year old girl who has been potty training for almost a year. She is really good about going pee pee in the potty and not having an accident, except she is scared to poop in the potty. She has gotten really constipated and we've had to give her laxitives, and now she'll tell us she needs to go, but still will not go in the potty, just in her pants. Does anyone one have any advice on how to help get her past this one last part of the training? Thank you ahead for your time and help!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice! I told Meadow yesterday if she went all week going poop in the potty we would get her a barbie - and what do you know - she went poop in the potty that day! We'll see if she keeps it up, but now I have some great ideas!

Thanks again!

J.

I am going through the exact same thing the books say its only a big deal if we make it one. what works for me is bribery. if you poop on the potty today (then move to two days etc.) i will take you to the park or get mcdonalds and so on. so far its working then when she does it i sing you poopooed in the potty and we dance and high five. praise and bribery can go a long way lol

Have you tried to reward her for going in the potty?

A lot of people didn't agree with my spanking thing, so we're gonna come up with something else. I also bought my Grandkids books about using the pottyand they use to take it with them when they went, that' helped with the pooping part. Plus, after you feed them, wait about half an hour or a little less and sit them on the potty and tell her it's okay to poop, then her panties on't be dirty. Last but not least, go but her her first pretty panties and tell her when she learns to poop in potty, she get's to wear these pretty panties and throw away those nasty pampers.

I don't agree with food treats for going to the bathroom. Food is a right, not a priviledge! We had a big sticker board for my oldest daughter. If she peed in the potty, she got 1 sticker, if she pooped in the potty, she got 2. After 25 stickers, she got to go to the store and get a toy. it worked really well. We started potty training her as soon as she turned 2 and was only in panties from then on. Good luck!

We've tried going and sitting on the potty every hour then every 45 min now we are down to every 30 min. We have tried sitting on her potty while I go potty, we have tried treats we have tried sticker charts I have tried praise, i've even tried putting her in dora big girl panties and she still just wont go. She every now and again will tell me and we will make it in time I just don't know what to do anymore. Any sujestions???

Hey J., I have 2 boys. My oldest, Jackson will be 4 Sunday and the youngest, Dylan is 2. With Jackson he was completely potty trained as far as peeing on the potty by 2 and a half, but he would not poop in it. So first, everytime he pooped in his pants, I would drop the poop in the potty and have him flush it. When he turned 3 I got more into trying to get him to poop in the potty. So we told him that when he went poop in the potty, we would give him a pooping party. It took him a week, and I would take him to wal-mart and show him things and say, when you go poop in the potty, I will get that for your party, etc. Finally he did, and we had a party for him, complete with balloons, and a cake, and even a present of new underwear he picked out. Everytime after that he went on his own. Now I am working on my 2 year old, and he is super stubborn. I think you just need to find what she likes, and try your best to encourage her to go. I am all about rewarding for the right behavior!! Good luck!

treats are the best way I found to get the child to go in the potty. Right now we're mainly worried about consistently peeing in the potty. Once that is accomplished then we'll get into consistently pooping.

my daughter had the same problem. we ended up giving her a small treat every time she went poopie in the potty. then for every week she went the whole week with out pooping in her pants we got her a bigger prize or went somewhere she wanted for dinner. it took a while but she eventually got it. the only thing i would say not to do is don't get mad. we also made sure her feet had something to be on, instead of just dangling. it made it easier for her to go. hope this helps
