i saw someone post something on here before, but i cant seem to find it. My daughter will be 5 in october, so she doesnt make the age cut off to start kindergarten. We really want to get her into a "formal" school setting, even if it halfs days, or only 2 or 3 days a week. She is very bright and she really wants to go! i remember someone posting something before about a free pre school program that was offered through the shawnee mission school, district that wasnt head start, but i cant seem to find it. I would even be fine with paying for pre-school, i just really do not want it through a church or something of the sort. does anyone know what im talking about or have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

The head start program is based on how much money you make so you may not be elegible for that program. You can find info on the Shawnee Mission website, but you may have to go to whatever elementary school is closest to your home's site. Sunshine Preschool is a great school and resonably priced. Their Pre-K program runs 4 days a week 9-11:30 or 12:30-3pm and is around 140/month. We were very happy there. They are not in a church, but do have a Christian background and do mention God here and there if that's an issue for you. We are not religious and did not have a problem with it.

You can check out Sunshine Preschool, it is not part of a church, but it is also not free.

The Goddard School at Shawnee Mission Pkwy and K-7 has a great program. We've been very happy with it.

L., I think what you may want to look for is the peer model program. Kids with special needs are put in a preschool setting (many of them have needs that are not obvious) and then an equal number of "typical peers" are placed in the same classroom to model appropriate behavior.

Both of my kids did this in Blue Valley and they loved it. They went to PE, music and art, had "reading buddies" with third grade students and were place on a curriculum that met their academic needs as well.

Above all, they learned about compassion and helping other who may need it. It was a great experience and I'm so glad we were able to participate in it.

I pretty sure that SM has a similar program. We paid around $150 a month and they went to school half days on Monday through Thursday. I'm like you, I didn't want a church setting or to be in the basement of some house. It really prepared my kids for school. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Shawnee Presbyterian Preschool is excellent! Not sure when the sign up is for the fall, but I would recommend contacting them a.s.a.p, because they usually fill up very quickly.
