I'm just wondering if any of you ladies had preclampsia/PIH in 1st pregancy but NOT the second pregnancy? Mine was mild preclampsia during the last month of pregnancy.
Thanks.

I had pre-eclampsia with my first pregnancy, my son was delivered 2 weeks early as a result of it. I didn't have any problems with the pregnancies of my other 3 children. :-) I've heard it's much more common in first pregnancies and having it once doesn't necessarily mean you'll get it again.

I had preeclampsia twice but odds are you will not.

Having pre-e close to term gives you a roughly 20% chance of developing it again: http://www.preeclampsia.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=331. So that means you have an 80% chance of not developing preeclampsia in a second pregnancy.

If you do develop pre-e in a again, odds are it is later in gestation and less severe.

I have found the Preeclampsia Foundation http://www.preeclampsia.org/ a great source of info and support.

Oh and if you check out the Research section of the PF's website, you will quickly find out pre-e has nothing to do with diet, as well as learning more about current research.

I was fine the whole way through until awful preeclampsia hit the last 3 mos of my pregnancy with #1. #2 I had horrible morning sickness, migraines, gestational diabetes, some odd episode that they couldn't define, but was similar to a mild stroke, but no preeclampsia.
This pregnancy, so far so good (I'm 20 weeks now) and no problems other than the usual lightheadedness if I stand up too fast or wait too long between eating. Every pregnancy is definitely different!
I had 2 different docs between my 1st & 2nd. My 1st doc wouldn't even tell me I had preeclampsia when I flat-out asked multiple times- she was awful! My 2nd doc is fantastic about telling me what's going on. She told me with #2 that my chances weren't any higher for having preeclampsia w/#2 than they were with #1. My chances of having diabetes this time around are only slightly higher than if I hadn't had it before.

I havent, but one of my coworkers had it in her first, she was on bed rest for 3 months, but no problem in her second.

I know the Duggar mom, who has 19 kids, had it in like, 2 or 3 of her pregnancies, but the rest were fine.

Every pregnancy is different, good luck!

I had severe preeclampsia which turned to eclampsia (seizures due to high bp) in first and went full term with 2nd with no problems at all. Be very dilligent about checking your BP several times a week. Be sure to tell your dr. if you start having head aches, seeing spots/visual disturbances, abdominal pain, or any other symptoms that are not normal for you. My dr. also saw me twice as often as normal in the last trimester in order to check BP and urine for protein. Best wishes.

First, I need to tell you the woman who said the preeclampsia is a diet issue and can be prevented is out of her mind and WRONG! Currently, researchers don't know exactly what causes it and there is no cure except delivery.
That said, my first and third pregnancies were completely healthy and normal. My second I was pregnant with twin girls and at 24 weeks developped severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. I nearly died and both my baby girls did die.
For my third pregnancy, they watched me like a hawk. I checked my BP every night, was at the doctor's office a ton and saw both my OB and a perinatologist. I was lucky, never got sick and have a beautiful baby boy.
It's just currently, impossible to predict if you'll be sick again or not.
If you want more information, I would suggest getting a perinatologist and also looking into the Preeclampsia Foundation. It's www.preeclampsia.org.
Good luck and stay healthy!

You only have an 8% chance of developing PIH with your second pregnancy after having it with the first IF the father's of the baby are the same. There is about an increase 4% chance in women who enter the pregnancy with chronic uncontrolled high blood pressure. If this is not the case you only have an 8% chance. Hope this is helpful and what you needed to hear.... BTW the 8% is not decreased by it being mild or severe. Oh one other factor that could affect it is if you had Lupus. Those women have a higher chance if developed the first pregnancy. These factors do not seem to include you..... So Happy Pregnancy.

I had it in my 1st and it was not caught early enough for bed rest. Went into hospital late Friday night and they gave me steroids over the weekend until my Dr came in on Monday they got ready for c section asap. My dd was born just before 32 weeks and very healthy.
When my second pg begain I had moved and had to change Dr. This guy was the cheif of ob and had studied preclapsia. He told me not to worry it wouldn't happen again (they odds where slim). I did, but not as bad and as soon as the symptoms apeared they did a cs. I was about a month further along in the 2nd pg. Ds was still a little small, but only 1 week in the hospital (no NICU).
I do suggest you learn what the symptoms are and keep an eye on yourself. If you can't afford to by a blood pressure cuff, go to a pharmacy once or twice a week and monitor yourself. Both of my dr overlooked it. My main since were swelling and quick weight gain. And I still have high blood pressure, but it also runs in my family.
