Preconception & Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with both my children I wanted to do a water birth but all my doctors told me it was a bad idea and my husband has lways been terrified of having a home birth in the even something goes wrong.We plan on eventually going in and bing implanted with a female when were ready for our final child.And I'd like atleast once a home birth, it seemed so rushed and uncomfortable at the hospital.And I think the answer to your question is that its highly important.I looked for miswives in my area but was told they arent covered my insurance and that a water birth isnt something they do here in ga

I don't think it is important at all. If you are educated, you should be able to take care of yourself at home.... and I don't believe in midwives at all. 2 of my best friends suffered horrible experiences with midwife deliveries in the last year. One at home that ended in the hospital with an emergency c-section. The other ended in death of a perfect baby boy, as the midwife didn't know the baby was in distress....

I WISH this was available to me. I really do not like how medicalized birth has become. I hated when I was giving birth to my son that because my water broke I was forced to lay still in the bed, I couldn't walk around or even get up to use the bathroom on my own... they made me use a bed pan :o( Then when my son was crowning I couldn't push because the doctor was performing a hysterectomy so I had to have an epideral and wait an hour so the doctor could be there. I was furious. I would much rather have a more comfortable environment to have my baby in. I am pregnant now and really wish I didn't have to go to the same hospital to have this baby but being military I am restricted as to what I am allowed to do.

I only go to a Midwife for all my care including birth. My last 3 births were at home, and the next one will be too. I live in GA and see a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife). My first two births were in the hospital and the first, I did not have a midwife. It was full of "made-up" complications and just awful. The second was with a midwife and quick and all natural. I figured for the third there would be no point going to the hospital, and have never gone back for another birth.

So I think it is very important. Having a midwife make a mom feel like she is not sick and she is in control of her own body. Birth is as natural as conception and our society needs to start seeing it as so. It is not an illness that needs to be treated.

I'm from Massachusetts, and my experience up there is that you only see a doctor if there is a problem. My town only had two OB/GYN offices, both headed by males. I have a personal issue with male OB/GYN's, so a midwife made sense to me. I had a problematic pregnancy and had to deliver at a hospital, and my daughter was delivered by a midwife. I am guessing that other areas do not require midwives to have the same training as a doctor? The only training the midwives up north do not have is to be able to perform a birth related surgery, other than that, they are trained for everything else. I think statistically, women attended to by midwives as opposed to doctors have a lower rate of C-section. I think in the end, it is a very personal decision and every woman is different and only she can make the decision.

A midwife is essential. Midwives delivered all three of my sons in hospitals. I had wonderful experiences each time with 3 different midwives and 2 different hospitals. We used the Bradley Method that makes the Husband responsible. That's a great method. I did learn to relax, but the most important thing is to get your mate educated with you. Midwives are usually very good at getting your mate involved. My opinion from personal experience. My boys, all honors students, all wonderfully handsome and glowing responsible young men. Exception, my 6 year old who believes he rules the Universe. :) Basically, he is the cutest ruler of our home at least. :)

Hi! I saw your question about midwives and water births in GA on here and just had to respond. I used a mid wife that worked in a large group under OB-GYN's for my daughter's birth. I REALLY wanted to have an under water birth but there was no facilities at the time that offered them. Since then i have been doing research and there is a hospital in Ga that is now offering them. I know that at home births in GA are illegal, so would not go that route for the next one. Although if they were legal i would highly consider it. I think it is of extreme importance to have a midwife/doctor involved in preconception, pregnancy, and after delivery for the families. It helps so much. We are considering having another child within the next year, my midwife stopped delivering babies and I now need to find a new one. But my goal is to find one that is associated with the hospital that does under water births (which is N. Fulton Regional Hospital). Thanks and do you have a website that I could visit? I am sure that we could use you while i am pregnant and after the delivery.
