Preeclampsia-Omega 3'S?

Hello, I am just wondering if any of you ladies have either had this experience or heard of this....

I had preeclampsia in my 1st pregnancy. I am considering another baby but very nervous. My perinatalogist prescribed DHA/Omega 3's. He said some research suggests that DHA Omega's can reduce the risk of a subsequent pregnancy with preeclampsia in some High Risk mothers.

Of course he said this should not be taken during pregnancy unless recommended and monitored by a licenced OB.

I've heard several women say that they did not develop PE in the 2nd pregnancy.....just wondering how many have heard of this...
Thanks!

What can I do next?

HadPE the first time. Bed rest for 4 weeks induced at 38 weeks..second one ...was so worried and nervous also..... but no problems! Did'nt take anything different with the second but I don't think it would hurt to take the omega's though. Good luck!

I had horrible PE with my first (delivered via C at 37 wks), my 2nd was fine as far as the PE went but I had a mild case of GD. So far so good with #3 (now 26 wks).

My first 2 were 5 yrs apart and during that time, they started including DHA in the prenatal vitamins. Not sure if this made a difference or not. I also eat pasta that has added dha & omega 3s since I don't eat any seafood. This was a general diet change anyway when I was trying to lose the weight from #1.

I had different OBs between #1 & 2. The doc w/#2 said my chances were only slightly higher for having it with another pregnancy and with #3 my chances are only slightly higher for having gestational diabetes again. She monitors me closely for both and I know what the symptoms are to look for on both.

The anxiety really doesn't help with either conception or keeping your blood pressure down. All you can do is relax & go with the flow. I know it's easier said that done! I see-saw between being a total control freak and being really easy going & laid-back. =o)

Each pregnancy is different- kinda like that famous Forrest Gump quote- you never know what you're going to get. =o)

I had preeclampsia with the first but not the second. Have not heard about the baby aspirin, but definitely think the DHA/Omega 3s are a good idea.
I can recommend a good one if you are interested. Most of the ones on the market are contaminated.

DHA or Omega 3s are definitely a good supplement to take regardless of whether you are pregnant or at high risk for preeclampsia anyway. I've read that they do help lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol and also lowers blood pressure -- all the better for a pregnant mother. The one thing that I would caution you on is making sure that the Omega 3 capsule that you take is not derived from mercury-tainted fish. Nordic Naturals is the brand that I use and it safe to use. Also, eating walnuts and flax seed or flax seed oil are also good sources of omega 3 fatty acids.

Wishing you well with your pregnancy.

I developed preeclampsia called HELLP syndrome with my second pregnancy. Because of this, we were very scared about being pregnant again. Well, six years later, we became pregnant with a 'surprise' baby (the best kind of surprise:)). We found out we were expecting at 16 weeks.

My friend suggested that her doctor said to take a baby aspirin with her second pregnancy because she too had preelampsia with the first. She said that she did not get PE with the second. So I went to my OBGYN, he went to the high risk specialist, confirmed that they have been discovering this, went back to me and told me to take one baby aspirin a day.

I did have to go on modified bedrest during the third trimester and take my blood pressure every day, but never developed preelampsia. I delivered a healthy, eight pound eight ounce baby girl at age 40.

Good luck... I do think the aspirin works. But it needs to be paired with a non stressed mother who is working closely with her doctor.

I had post-partum pre-eclampsia 3 days after the birth of my first son. Very rare, but of course they watched me like a hawk with my second. I took DHA/Omega 3s with both pregnancies, so it didn't prevent it with the first, but I did not have it with my second.

Hi ARM---It is thought that omega 3's reduce inflammation, which might be a factor in developing preeclampsia. I believe that we might need to supplement with 3's, as our American diet and propensity for processed foods gives us too much omega 6 fatty acids. An imbalance of those fats in the body also leads to inflammation. There are also many high quality plant-based sources of omega 3's, like ground flax seed.

I can't offer any help with the risks of PE again in a second pregnancy, but I'm sure that you are at a higher risk. I could offer you some information on omega 3's, ways to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body (and when pregnant, you create lots more of both). I can also share research on how a whole food, research based supplement, made from 15 different fruits and veggies, and the bran of 2 grains, supports a healthy pregnancy (and every cell in the body, baby too!) and greatly reduces the risk of preeclampsia.

If you would like to know more, I would be honored to share with you. Please feel free to contact me. It is my goal and passion to help others learn why our nutrition is so important, and then how to optimize our health. We can chat for a bit to see if it makes sense to you. Good luck with your research and hope to hear from you soon. In health, D.
