"Pregnancy Acne"

I have NEVER been one to have bad skin - just lucky I guess. HOWEVER, I am pregnant with my second child and see a pattern. I get really bad acne when pregnant. I know that pregnant women are to stay away from products containing Sylic (sp?) acid. Therefore, I do not know what to use on my skin to help clear this up. Does anyone have personal experience with this? If so, what did you do.

What can I do next?

I used benzoyl peroxide on my face. It got a tube from Clean n' Clear. I also steered away from products that had extra oils in the them like some moisturizers. I used a moisturizer geared towards people with acne (no extra medication). I also would use a mask once a week or so to tone down the extra oil my face was creating. I hope this helps!!

I used tea tree oil on the blemishes themselves. Stay away from products with alcohol as they can be drying and make it worse. I also really like the Kiss My Face products.

I am having the same problem with this pregnancy. I have acne anyway but it has worsened now. I admit to using my prescription retin-a as a spot treatment knowing I shouldn't. I have just decided to suck it up until this phase of the pregnancy is over. Once the progesterone kicks in during the third trimester I know it will go away. Actually, my face is more clear during the 3rd trimester than it ever is pregnant or not :)

When I was pregnant I had issues with breaking out. Then I had a miscarriage and it got worse. The biggest mistake I made was thinking there was nothing I could put on my skin because of the baby. Now that I am trying to get pregnant again I still wasn't using anything to control the breakouts. Finally I went in to see a dermatologist and she prescribed me two things that are perfectly safe to use while trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy. They are both topical creams- you can't be on any oral medications while pregnant or nursing. I wish I had gone in sooner. You should get an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as possible. She may even give you some free samples. I didn't have to fill a prescription for more than a month due to the samples. Then you'll know if the stuff is working for you. Ask her about salicylic acid while you are there. I was told it is safe to use. Like another person wrote, you should definitely be careful with the type of makeup you use. You wouldn't believe how bad it is for you if it is not mineral based. Hope this helps. I certainly know what you are going through. :)

Hi, M.,

I'm sorry you going through this. I can't say I have had this problem but I wanted to share a possiblity.

I am a consultant with Arbonne and we have a Natural Hormonal Cream that balance hormones. It is Progesterone Cream - bio-identical to what your body produces and is perfectly safe during pregnacies. I have been told you can put it directly onto your acne and will go away the next day or two. I would love to let you try this for this problem just to get your testimony. You can try it for FREE for several days to see if it will work. I would LOVE for the feed back.

This information was passed to me from a P.A. from Kiser and a Hollywood make-up artist. What do you think? Let me know and I would be happy to meet with you to drop off the product to you.

You could try using a face cleanser that is non-oily. I know during pregnancy, your skin tends to become more oily. I would suggest Neutragena or Cephalia.

Hormonal acne. Oh, the joy. I used to brag about never having had acne as a teenager, and them karma caught up with me. LOL
After about a year of spending way too much at the beauty counters for products that didn't work, I ended up getting light therapy and cleansing facials at the spa. You can also have extractions done if needed. That really is the most effective way to treat the acne. There is a prescription for acne, but it causes birth defects and all kinds of other yucky side effects.
My doctor did tell me that stress can make it worse, so you could say the spa appointment was a double treatment. I get it done about twice a year, and that's still less expensive than all the money I wasted on ineffective overpriced products at the department stores.
If you're using anything other than mineral based make-up, throw it out. Doesn't matter if you buy the Jane Iredale, or the Physician's Formula, stick with minerals and you won't regret it.
H2O carries a good line of skin care products, but they can get a little pricey. Proactive is another very effective product, but it's time consuming and does contain a lot of chemicals
The best drugstore brand products I've used are Oil of Olay, which has done a better job than Clinique. Remember to use gentle cleansers, mild toners, and light moisturizers. Overcleansing or scrubbing irritates the skin and can actually make the acne worse. You want to calm and soothe your face, not stimulate it.
Just cleanse once in the morning, apply your toner, and moisturize. Then repeat the same process at night. You may be self conscious, but try to avoid touching your face other than to do your beauty routine.
And if all else fails remember: bringing another life into the world is the most beautiful thing anyone can do. Just you focus on that bump in your belly, not the one on your face, and you'll be okay. Good luck!
