Hoping that some of you Moms out there can help me out. I have two children and am thinking about getting an IUD. My Dr. recommends the Mirena - although I was thinking about the paragaurd due to no hormones. My main concern is that I will probably want to try and get pregnant in three years, anyone out there have an IUD and gotten pregnant after having it removed? Did you have any trouble getting pregnant? Did you have the Mirena or Paragaurd? Also, I have several friends who have the Paragaurd and highly recommend it, any Mirena users out there?

What can I do next?

I had a Mirena IUD for a year and a half after my son was born. After I had it removed, we used other protection for a month and then started trying. We were pregnant the next month. Fertility has never been an issue for us =) After my daughter was born, I had another Mirena put in. I haven't had any issues. I don't know anything about the other IUD you mentioned. Good LUCK!

I had a Mirena. It worked great. I had it taken out and was pregnant within 2 months. I recommend the Mirena. (I also enjoyed almost not having my period - I would get it just a little for about a day!)

I have Mirena and love it. I haven't had my period since the first month it was inserted and even then it was small. I recommend it to all my friends that have had a baby. I have not had another child yet but plan to in the next two years so hopefully the removal of it is just as easy.

I have a Mirena and absolutely love it! The insertion hurt more than I expected, but I think that may have been because I had 3 c-sections and no vaginal births. I had very little bleeding and when it stopped...it stopped for good! I have not had a period in over a year now. Honestly I have not done the string test...so can not attest if it is actually still there, but since I get pregnant on the drop of a hat, I think it is right where it needs to be. We are actually thinking of taking it out in the next few months to see if we can get pregnant again, won't know until then if it is possible.

Good luck with whatever you decide!!

I can tell you good things about the Mirena. I've had it since December 2006 and I have no complaints. I hardly ever get a period or if I do it is hardly noticeable. We haven't decided about a 2nd child yet, so haven't had it removed. I do have a friend who had it after her first child and a little under 2 years later, she got it removed and got pregnant. I don't think she had any trouble getting pregnant after having the Mirena.

Another friend has had the Paragaurd (I don't think she's had any complaints) and just got it removed b/c they are going to start trying for a 2nd child, but they are planning on starting this January, so too soon to tell you her experience...

Good luck with your decision!

So my exp. with Mirena was HORRIBLE. I chose that IUD because my doc said the Paraguard was so bad, he refused to put it in anyone. (months of heavy bleeding and cramping) Insertion wasn't too bad. It did hurt, but was mostly like mild contractions. So I'm not really sure what the difference was with the Mirena because i bled for almost 3 months straight, very heavy bleeding at that. Once it finally slowed down to normal periods i was so relieved.

One day i was doing the monthly string check, and they weren't there... :-/ I called my doc and they said the strings were just tucked up in there and gave me an appt. for 2 weeks later. WELL, two weeks later, after an internal exam, internal AND external ultrasound AND being shipped to the hospital for an x-ray, the decided it was gone!!!! IT FELL OUT!!!!!! I never even saw the darn thing! The doctor said, " oh no worries, it's floating around in a toilet somewhere.." (I never had a problem with this OBGYN until now, actually loved them.... rethinking the "love" word at this point...)I had been walking around for weeks with no birth control!! No one told me that was a possibility when i had it put in, but i guess it is pretty rare. All the doctors seemed pretty amazed by me. It was great to feel like a science project. Make sure you know ALL the side effects and possible things that could go wrong before you get it.

We are now trying for baby number 2, and it's been about two months with no success yet. (Every time I've tried in the past i was PG within 2 weeks, but also had 2 miscarriages) Not sure if that has anything to do with the IUD though.

I've heard the NuvaRing is great, and that will be my next option when it is needed. My doc said that the hormones in things like IUDs and the ring don't really matter because they are mostly contained to the uterus. (Then again, why would i trust anything they say now??)Hope everything works out for you. Good luck!

I got the Mirena after the birth of my first child, had it taken out to have another baby, and got pregnant within two months. I now have it again. I really think it's great, especially because it reduces your periods to almost nothing.

Hi S.:
I used the paragard and loved it. It did give me longer and heavier periods, but totally tolerable. I have never been someone to experience bad cramps on a monthly basis and this was not an issue for me with the paragard. It will not effect fertility since there are no hormones.
I am a midwife by profession, so can speak to the Mirena from that point of view. I had clients who loved it and didn't (like with every other method available). Due to the hormones, it may take some months for your body to start ovulating again (once removed); for some women the return is immediate and for others it can take several months. Many women like the Mirena as it eventually lightens your periods, but know that in the process you may have irregular spotting and cramping, which can be tolerable if you expect it, but burdensome for some women. All of the methods have pros and cons, so it's just thinking about what YOU can tolerate. With either of the two, you can expect good pregnancy prevention.
Good luck.

I have the Mirena IUD. I decided on that one due to the excessive cramping and heavy periods I heard that the copper IUD can have as a side effect. I was told by many doctors that the Mirena only places the hormone in the uterus, unlike the pill which effects the whole body.

Anyway, I had the Mirena placed, hurt a lot more than I thought it would, but just during the visit. Found out from my regular doc on the 4 week followup that I should check for the string occasionally to make sure it is still there, since slippage and or dislodging while rare, can occur.

So far it's not bad, and has kept me from back to back to back pregnancies. Which is what I wanted. I'll be making an appointment for it's removal within the next month to try for a third baby (maybe this one will be a girl).

I still have periods, they are more annoying moments than anything else. Every third month or so I experience cramping (light to moderate) and I get a monthly flow that needs a pantyliner (not even some months) for a day and that's it.

Hi S.-
I had the Paraguard IUD and had it removed this past January. I am now pregnant and due in April. Overall, I was pleased with the IUD, but I did have the first one displace a couple months after I got it and had to get another placed. My periods were heavier and more crampy with the IUD. I believe the Mirena decreases flow/cramps, but the Paraguard can make them worse.
About a month I had it taken out for good, I had intense pain on my right side. I ended up having a tubo ovarian abscess. My GYN said it was unrelated to the IUD and had to come from the outside. Was not fun and thankfully, I did not need surgery and mine went away with just antibiotics. There are some people who have had nightmares with them and some who have been very happy with them. Good luck in your decision!

I did the Paraguard for 2 years. My cramping a little worse than on the pill - but I wanted to be free of hormones (and by a little, I had pretty much no cramps with pill.. so maybe I went back to a normal woman)

I am now 18 weeks pregnant - 3 months after taking it out.
